Calaveras Big Trees State Park South Grove Trail, 7 miles Intermediate

Calaveras Big Trees State Park is the home of over 900 Giant Sequoia Trees. We will start from the park's main entrance ($10.00 parking fee) and drive 8.3 miles to the South Grove parking area. The drive to the trailhead is beautiful with spectacular views of Mount Whitney. From the trailhead, we will start along the South Grove trail which follows Big Trees Creek for a short distance, turn right at a fork in the trail and over a bridge crossing the creek, follow the well maintained trail through the thick coniferous forest which only exists in certain areas of the Sierra Nevada. The trail is well shaded with several small creek crossings. Along the trail we will walk among the Giant Sequoias. Some of these Sequoias are over 30 feet in diameter and 300 feet tall, which make for additional photograph opportunities. At the next fork in the trail, veer right and follow the trail past the Palace Hotel Tree and end up at the Agassiz Tree which is the largest tree in the park. After a short break we will head back to the bridge crossing Big Trees Creek, kick off our boots and put our feet in the water while we enjoy a quick lunch. After lunch you can drive back up and enjoy the Visitors Center and take an optional 1.7 mile loop through the North Grove. This portion of the day is optional. The South Grove Trail is an in and out trail which is approximately 7 miles with about 500 feet of elevation change. Beginner hikers who want a slight challenge are encouraged to try this trail.

Sorry but dogs are not allowed on the State Park hiking trails.

Thanks Greg for putting this together. It was a beautiful hike. Sorry we left the group half way through but that adventurist part of me kicked in and we ended up exploring toward Bradley Grove and Railroad Tree. Ended up doing about 10.5 miles. It was a perfect day.

Hi Melanie, This trail is very well maintained, free of obstructions and a beginner/intermediate hike. From the trailhead the trail has a gradual up slope with only 500 feet elevation gain. We will be hiking at a moderate pace, however there are so many photograph opportunities on this hike, that keeping up will not be a problem. We never leave anyone behind and you won't hold anyone up. Be adventurous, and we will see you Saturday am.

This description helps me too...now I know I can definitely do this hike. Thanks...

      July 10, 2013

    • Greg S

      Yes you can!

      July 10, 2013

  • Melanie

I am very excited about going on this hike but I also want to be realistic. Is this hike doable for a beginner hiker? I walk a lot but have not done a hike in years. I am in fair shape though.. no problems there. Please will someone reply to these questions. I dont want to hold up people if everyone is way better than me at hiking this trail. I am feeling very adventurous about it but want some feedback. Thank you.

If heading back to Sac immediately after the 7 mi. South Grove Trail, does an approximate return time of 4:00 sound reasonable?

For those meeting at other locations and at the trailhead. Its about a two hour drive from 11th and P. We should be at the trailhead around 10:00. If you dont meet with us a11th and P, send me a text so we know to look for you at the trailhead.

    July 9, 2013

  • Greg S

There will be plenty of room for you in one of the carpools. We will divide into carpools at 11th and P. Try to be there a few minutes before 8:00.

    July 9, 2013

  • Arthur L. T

I will meet at 11th and P Street in Downtown to see if I can carpool with one of you. I ride public transit, I don't drive.

    July 9, 2013

  • Greg S

I have been out of town and would like to thank Doreen for stepping up and answering all your questions.

    July 8, 2013

  • Greg S

We will devide up into car pools at the 11th and P st park and ride. The trail is well shaded and the trail is very nicely maintained, so a beginner should have no problems on this trail.

    July 8, 2013

  • Janice Marie F.

One other question...any guestimation on being back to 11th&P post-hike. I'm just curious ;-) thanks...

    July 7, 2013

    • Doreen N.

Depending on if your carpool group chooses to do the north grove hike and or spend time at the visitors center, estimated time back in Sac will be around 4:30- 5:00pm.

      July 8, 2013

    • Janice Marie F.

$16 I'll have + the $10 park entrance fee...I'm so excited...this'll be my first time seeing the big majestic Sequoias up close and personal <3

      July 8, 2013

  • Melanie

I dont think my last post posted so If I am repeating myself just ignore. I would like to carpool from 11th and P. Just to clarify are we meeting at 11th and P at 8am? How much would I need for gas? Look forward to it. It is my first hike with this group or any meet up. I was a bit concerned at first that I should join a beginner one but 7miles seems doable if it is on a nice trail and mostly in the shade so, I am going to go for it.

    July 8, 2013

    • Doreen N.

We'll meet at 11th & P and form car pool groups. Plan on $16 for your share of the gas.

      July 8, 2013

  • Julie C

I'm looking forward to this hike. I would like to carpool if someone has room in their vehicle. Julie C.

I have been to Calaveras Big Trees a number of times, but have never hiked the South Grove Trail... looking forward to it.

    July 7, 2013

  • Arthur L. T

' Hello everyone, I would like to carpool with one of you. I don't drive. I ride public transit and walk. I will help pay for gas. I live in the South Natomas Area.

    July 7, 2013

  • Janice Marie F.

Wow!!! I'd love to finally see in person Giant Sequoias <3 I would need to carpool from 11th&P, though I need to know how much gas $$$ for the ride, as there's no $$$ gas carpool price listed.

    July 6, 2013

    • Doreen N.

The suggested carpool contribution is $4 per hour of driving. So, yes, plan on $16 for this trip.

      July 7, 2013

    • Janice Marie F.

Doreen thanks for your response. $16 is fine...just wanted to make sure 'cause entrance is $10 so I don't want to be short on the gas end after paying $10 entrance = eg want to have all $$$s necessary to pay out for this trip ;-), which I will. So all I need is a carpool and I'm good. FYI I always pay driver gas money before we leave the carpooling parking lot :-D...

      July 7, 2013

  • Karen

Will meet at the park and ride

    July 7, 2013

  • Maria

If everyone is meeting at the carpool at 8, what time do you expect to be at the trailhead?

    July 6, 2013

  • Maria

We will meet everyone at the trailhead.

    July 6, 2013

  • Buffy

Would anybody like to carpool from Placerville?
