Approx. 5 miles. 1 3/4 hours +/-

Meet by 6:00 PM, leave at 6:11

It’s almost October and it’s time to commemorate our ancestors. So why not take a hike to the Old Sacramento City Cemetery to see the burial sites of many of Sacramento’s founders. This urban hike takes you to the Old City Cemetery then around Capitol Park and back.

Route Description:

Starting at Vallejo’s in downtown Sacramento at 4th and S Streets we will hike through the Southside Park neighborhood to the Old City Cemetery at 10th and Broadway.

Once at the cemetery we will walk respectfully (Click here for cemetery etiquette) through the “streets” of the cemetery looking at various grave sites and visiting the burial sites of John Sutter Jr. [masked]), Edwin Bryant Crocker [masked]), Mark Hopkins [masked]) and others. (Click here for a self-guided tour map).

Exiting the cemetery we will travel down Riverside Blvd and 11th street to Capitol Park. At the park we will walk by various memorials including the Veterans Memorial, Firefighers Memorial and Vietnam Memorial. Leaving the park will then return to Vallejo’s.

Other Information:

There is plenty of free parking after 6:00 pm along S street between 3rd and 4th streets.
For those that have the time afterwards, we'll go for beer, margaritas, and/or dinner at Vallejo's Restaurant on the corner of 4th and S streets.

To get to the meetup location from I-5, take the Q street exit then right on 3rd street to S street. From Hwy 50 take I-5 north to the Q Street exit. The meetup location is 6 blocks from the 8th and O Street Light Rail Station.

The cemetery is closed on Wednesdays but open on Tuesdays. I called and the summer hours are still in effect through the end of October. They close a 7 pm.

Another hiking group I'm in scheduled this for a Wednesday but the cemetery is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I see from their web site, they are closed at 5pm every day for the winter hours now in effect. Will we still be able to walk through it?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
