Sweetwater Loop across Old Salmon Falls Hidden Bridge

We need to catch this while the water is still low.  6.5 or 8 mile loop.  You choose.

We will start at the Sweetwater Trailhead in the parking lot just south of the Salmon Falls Bridge. We'll head south along the South Fork of the American River for about 3.5 to 4 miles where we will make a turn near Sweetwater Creek.  For those of you that want to do the shorter route we will pass a trail junction at about 3 miles that goes directly down to the Old Salmon Falls Hidden Bridge. The rest of us will follow the trail along Sweetwater Creek and explore the open lands where you will see old steps and concrete structures from back in the days.  You'll see the old hidden bridge in the distance.  They call this the hidden bridge because once the water rises the bridge is submerged and no longer passable. We'll come back along the creek to the bridge where we can stop and have lunch.  After lunch we will continue across the bridge (for the shorter hikers as well) and continue up the hill until we hit a trail crossing.  We will turn right and follow the trail back towards Salmon Falls bridge.  We will have to walk across the bridge back to the cars.  There is no sidewalk on the bridge so be careful.

Directions:

From P & R get on I-50 east.

Exit El Dorado Hills Blvd/Latrobe and turn left on El Dorado Hill Blvd.

In 4.2 miles this road turns into Salmon Falls Rd.

Continue 5.7 miles and park in the lot on the left just before the Salmon Falls Bridge.

$10 parking fee per car. State parking pass accepted.
Carpooling recommended.

The trail starts south to the back end of the parking lot.

Please car pool with those doing the same distance 6.5 or 8 miles.

We should arrive at the bridge at about 9:40 am.

This is a new link taking I-50 rather than Blue Ravine http://goo.gl/maps/HxKV8

Things to bring;

Good walking shoes, plenty of water, snacks, lunch, weather appropriate clothes and an adventurist attitude.

Heavy rain will cancel.

Nice new trail and thanx jeff k and shannon b for keeping the herd in check-- nice hike and hard to believe that the high water mark would be 64 feet above the bridge when folsom is full-- it was nice to see the bridge but rather have the water… nice to meet so many new folks-- welcome to our group

Trying to decide whether to meet at the trail head or car pool. The trail head is actually closer to my location, but was going to car pool to save space on parking at the location. I also have a bike rack on my vehicle, so I may park just outside the area and bike in if the seats are full for the available car pool.

    November 22, 2013

    • Shannon B

There are always seats available because most people make carpool arrangements when they get to the park and ride.

      November 22, 2013

I'll need a ride from Park and Ride, I'll try to be there 8:45.
