Try again for Robinson Flat

It has not snowed again since the first storm snowed us out, and it should not snow before Sunday, so let's try for Robinson Flat on the Foresthill Divide again. I did the hike today (Tuesday) to check it out and it was beautiful. It should be beautiful on Sunday too.

So join me for about a four mile hike. We will hike up to the fire lookout and back. Great views from the fire lookout as you can imagine. Hike will be about 400 feet of elevation gain.

We will have lunch at the fire lookout (Duncan Peak Fire Lookout).

There is also a short 1/2 mile loop hike around the meadow that is very nice, and a longer 4.4 mile hike, that goes downhill and connects with the Western States Trail and comes back up to the meadow at Robinson Flat. That trail is about 1700 feet of elevation gain for any hearty hikers who would like to do that as we return from Duncan Peak. I did it this year, and do not need to do it again, but, then, I'm a wimp. I did not hike it today (Tuesday), so there may be some snow on the trail on the shady side of the mountain that I do not know about, but the trail should be hikable if anyone wants to do it.

Robinson Flat is about 6700 feet elevation and is a way-point on the Western States 100 mile run and horse race. There was patchy snow on the ground there today (Tuesday), and it will not all melt by Sunday, so be prepared for cool temperatures like it was today, but also be able to shed a layer when we hike in the Sun. I was a bit too cool today as there was a breeze, so will wear a heavier sweater Sunday.

Directions to Robinson Flat:

Take Hwy 80 east to Auburn.

Exit Foresthill Exit (exit 121) and turn RIGHT and go through the light onto Foresthill Road.

Continue on Foresthill Road (through the town of Foresthill. After Foresthill, the road is called 'Foresthill Divide' road) for approximately 60 miles up the hill until the pavement runs out at Robinson Flat. Then straight ahead on the gravel road and curve to the right to enter the parking area . Park across from the restrooms.

We will meet at the Robinson Flat parking at 10:45am for those who drive there directly, which will include me. The drive from the freeway off-ramp to the top at Robinson Flat takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Dogs are welcome.

This is a fun hike with nice views. I hope you will join me.

I'm so glad you love it, Chico, as I love it too! That's why I worked so hard to introduce it to the group before the snows keep us out until late next spring. I'm glad the 'weather God' cooperated after snowing us out earlier.

The extended hike was great. There was snow and ice on parts of the trail so we had to be extra careful. Thanks to Tony and Charlotte for loaning out their poles.

For those who would like to view the pictures taken by John Oliver who was the fire lookout person this summer, here is the link:

My picture is #190 in "friends of Duncan Peak". I am with my adventure buddy, Mel. Kinda fun to see all the visitors to Duncan Peak.

There are also pictures of the American Fire.

John is a pretty good photographer.

    Tom,

I am checking mapquest and Goo-Goo maps and the road is named Foresthill Rd on them once past the thriving metropolis of Foresthill. I take it that is what you mean by 'Forest Divide' road? Further it seems 'the pavement runs out at Robinson Flat' is in reference to where Foresthill Rd (this road actually makes a u-trun) and Robinson Flat Rd meet, is that correct and the parking area is pretty much right there, i.e. a couple hundred feet curving to the right?

    November 16, 2013

    • Tom W.

I looked at mapquest and it is called both along the route: (+4 bars) http://www.mapquest.c...

I stand corrected Tom, you are right, silly me for not seeing the details!!!

Hi Athena I'm Julie can I bring a really nice friend and is the hike hard? See you at sun splash at 9:00 am Julie

    November 16, 2013

    • Tom W.

I originally listed it as an easy hike, Julie, but there is 400 feet of elevation gain. The trail is an easy grade up, and I will go slow enough that it should be no problem. Worst case, you can turn around and go back down. I think you will be OK. If you bring a friend, that would be nice, and please change your RSVP to Julie +1. There should be enough carpools to accomodate you. Hopefully Athena will be able to bring you both.

      November 16, 2013

      Sure, Julie.

    November 16, 2013

    • Tom W.

Thanks, Arthur. The latest weather report I have forecasts mostly sunny with a high of 50 degrees and very little wind. So, should be a great hike weatherwise.
