It has not snowed again since the first storm snowed us out, and it should not snow before Sunday, so let's try for Robinson Flat on the Foresthill Divide again. I did the hike today (Tuesday) to check it out and it was beautiful. It should be beautiful on Sunday too.
So join me for about a four mile hike. We will hike up to the fire lookout and back. Great views from the fire lookout as you can imagine. Hike will be about 400 feet of elevation gain.
We will have lunch at the fire lookout (Duncan Peak Fire Lookout).
There is also a short 1/2 mile loop hike around the meadow that is very nice, and a longer 4.4 mile hike, that goes downhill and connects with the Western States Trail and comes back up to the meadow at Robinson Flat. That trail is about 1700 feet of elevation gain for any hearty hikers who would like to do that as we return from Duncan Peak. I did it this year, and do not need to do it again, but, then, I'm a wimp. I did not hike it today (Tuesday), so there may be some snow on the trail on the shady side of the mountain that I do not know about, but the trail should be hikable if anyone wants to do it.
Robinson Flat is about 6700 feet elevation and is a way-point on the Western States 100 mile run and horse race. There was patchy snow on the ground there today (Tuesday), and it will not all melt by Sunday, so be prepared for cool temperatures like it was today, but also be able to shed a layer when we hike in the Sun. I was a bit too cool today as there was a breeze, so will wear a heavier sweater Sunday.
Directions to Robinson Flat:
Take Hwy 80 east to Auburn.
Exit Foresthill Exit (exit 121) and turn RIGHT and go through the light onto Foresthill Road.
Continue on Foresthill Road (through the town of Foresthill. After Foresthill, the road is called 'Foresthill Divide' road) for approximately 60 miles up the hill until the pavement runs out at Robinson Flat. Then straight ahead on the gravel road and curve to the right to enter the parking area . Park across from the restrooms.
We will meet at the Robinson Flat parking at 10:45am for those who drive there directly, which will include me. The drive from the freeway off-ramp to the top at Robinson Flat takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Dogs are welcome.
This is a fun hike with nice views. I hope you will join me.
