Salmon Lake via Loch Leven Lakes Trail

Almost 8 miles round trip and approx. 1,500 elevation change makes this an intermediate hike.  This is a beautiful area of granite, alpine lakes, and lovely views. Expect some ice and snow on the trail so bring your hiking poles and sturdy boots.

The trail starts at the Big Bend trailhead off of I-80. After you pass the first of the three Loch Leven Lakes, the trail to Salmon Lake beckons. From here it is 1.2 miles to the lake. We will return the same way we came in. Well-mannered dogs OK. Heavy weather cancels.

Meet at the Roseville Sunsplash Park N Ride near the Shell Station @ 9am sharp if you'd like to carpool or caravan to the trailhead. I expect we will back to Roseville before 5.

I enjoyed the hike especially when it started snowing in the forest. Thanks Marcie for hosting the hike!

I'm guessing the rain will be mild if any.

I was looking at the forecast for Truckee, Auburn and the Tahoe National Forest and it looks like a good 60% chance of rain with winds in the 20mph range. I think I am going to cancel although I will check the forecast in the early morning and if it looks better I will come.

    Yes - I'm still on

That sounds like the forecast for Sac. The forecast for Salmon Lake is a high of 41, wind gusts up to 31, 60% chance of rain or snow. That's what we buy the gear for. Let's go.

Just checked the weather for tomorrow, it will be overcast, with a 30% chance of rain. Probably in the 50s. The hike is about 7 + miles, if it gets ugly we could turn around at the lower lake. Is everyone still in for the hike? Please confirm

  • Robin

Yes, 70% chance it won't rain. Planning to bring rain gear just in case.

Looks like I will be working so I am going to cancel

We will be at an elevation of about 5,700 to 6,800 feet above sea level. At this elevation I expect some snow and ice on the trail but I also expect that many hikers have accessed the area since the last snowfall beating a path for us. Hiking poles; sturdy, water proof boots; and a willingness to deal with potentially slippery conditions are needed.

There was hardly any snow at Loon Lake last Saturday. No worries. There's a drought on.

This should be under snow this time of year.
    Have you checked on conditions.
