FLIPPIN' FRIDAY - Valentine's Lunch in Cool - 7 Miles Intermediate

Wondering what you're going to do on Valentine's Day?  Well, if you don't get a better offer, come and join your fellow hikers for lunch up at the American River Pizza in Cool.

Assuming the weather is good, there is an outside patio in the sun, well suited for a cool beer, or plate of something tasty.  Plus, our 4 legged friends can also sit out there with us.

Let's meet at the Confluence area in front of gate # 150 at 9.30am. See directions below.

We'll hike up the Pointed Rocks Trail, aka Training Hill (1 mile strenuous) and then continue to Cool via the Olmstead Loop.

http://www.americanriverpizza.com/

You don't have to eat or drink at the restaurant.  You can certainly bring your own snacks if you prefer.  However, they do offer a salad bar, burgers, and sandwiches if you're not a fan of pizza.

After our little respite, we can either return on the Wendell T. Robie trail back to the confluence, or cross over 49 and come back down along the Quarry Trail...Let's decide on the day after we see how much time we have left.

This hike will be approx 7 miles roundtrip with the first mile being strenuous, but it'll work up a thirst for a beer sampling!

*** Please, please, if you haven't hiked much before or are just getting into it, don't attempt this hike.  Training Hill is not recommended for beginners.  It's extremely gnarly...This crew usually hikes at at least a 3 mile an hour pace.  If you want to start early on the hill and meet us at the top, that's fine.  We usually arrive around 10.15am at the peak of Training Hill.  Just let me know in your RSVP**

Directions to trailhead: Trailhead is on Hwy 49, 1¾ miles south of ASRA Park Headquarters.

I-80 east to Auburn Exit Elm

Left on Elm

Left on 49 (High Street)

What a fun hike with lots of nice people. And the weather was gorgeous for February. Resting up and then looking forward to the same hike tonight after dark.

So Bob I guess you will not be driving to Cool. So that means I do have to hike down. :)

Hearts are supposed to be pounding on Valentines Day. Something like 22 people's hearts were beating even harder courtesy of Training Hill. Great hike. Even better group. Thanks for leading.

    Hi All,
I'm going to start about 30 minutes earlier, too, and will wait for you at the top of TH!

    February 14, 2014

  • Beatrice

I am going to miss yet another Friday hike :-( I need to help my daughter with something. Sorry! Have fun.

    February 14, 2014

  • Carla

    Hi All,
Jan and Jordan are starting a bit earlier to get a head start on TH. If anyone else prefers to do that too, that's fine. Let's just all meet up at the top of Training Hill and go from there together!

    February 12, 2014

    • Steve G

I'm going to try to start a bit early as well, so see you at the top if not on the way up.

  • Helio

The flu has knocked down my guest and we won't be able to join you tomorrow. Sorry and have fun everyone.

I thought I was signed up for this one. Don't know what happened but suspect it has something to do with my malfunctioning computer. If no spaces open up you all have a great Valentine's Day and I will see you next week!

    February 13, 2014

  • Carla

    Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
I've opened up a few more spots so we are all accommodated. Just a quick note, I will need to get back now on Friday earlier than anticipated, so may just stay for a short time at the restaurant before hiking back. You're all welcome of course to stay there as long as you like, as most of you know the route anyway. If anyone wants to hike back earlier with me, that would be fine too. See you on Friday!

I need to be back in Folsom by 1:00PM and thought I may only do TH and the loop without going to Cool. I will have your book. Loved it.

Wunderbar.

      February 12, 2014

  • Helio

I will be bringing two guests instead of one. Hope Carla won't mind.

    • Helio

Thanks, Carla! Is The trailhead the sane as training hill Jr?

      February 12, 2014

    • Carla

I'm not familiar with Training Hill Jr. Our Training Hill is by green gate 150 at the Confluence (just by the river and the bridge). That's where we meet.

  • Vickey M.

I won't be able to attend after all, so another space is freed up.

    February 12, 2014

  • Helio

I'm still a little confused as to the location of the trailhead. Is this the same one for the Training Hill Jr.?

I have a question - my dog is a 6-year-old lab. He's not overweight and is used to 45-minute walks or jogs, or running crazy at the dog park, but I'm not sure he has the stamina for 7 miles. I guess we take a break in the middle? Anyone have any advice as to whether I should bring him or not? Is the trail really narrow, or is it a wide track? Thanks!

    February 12, 2014

    • Steve G

It's very steep for a mile at the start. The trail varies between wide and narrow, but it's pretty rocky and gravelly much of the way, so I would be concerned if he has soft paws.

      February 12, 2014

    • Carla

Jill, I agree with Steve. The first mile is quite gnarly. We will stop at the restaurant for a break/lunch, which is about 3 1/2 miles into it. The return trip is pretty much all downhill. We usually have quite an assortment of dogs from tiny to large, but if your lab gets tired, it wouldn't be possible to carry him. I guess it's up to you. Worst case, you turn around if he/she can't make it. We love seeing the dogs on the trail, so he/she is very welcome if you do decide to bring him.

Carla, Thanks for opening up more spots! See ya Friday!

I'm going to get an early start. Jordan and I will see you at the top

Thank you Beatrice. Out of town this weekend and came home that way off 80. You are absolutely right!

    February 3, 2014

  • Amy W.

Thanks Carla. Your directions are most helpful!

    January 18, 2014

    • Beatrice

Amy where are you coming from? I come from Folsom and take Folsom Auburn Rd. Easier than Salmon Falls Rd.

      February 2, 2014

  • Amy W.

If I come via Salmon Falls road how do I find Gate 150?

    January 18, 2014

    • Carla

Amy, to be honest I have no idea. I've never been to Salmon Falls Road. But, I did type it into MapQuest http://www.mapquest.c...

      January 18, 2014

    • Carla

Looks like you can take 49 into Cool, follow it towards Auburn and at the Confluence, you'll see gate 150 on your left, with the cars parked on the street (right before you cross the river). That's the gate you want. If you cross the bridge and see No Hands Bridge on your left and start going up hill towards Auburn, you've gone too far! Hope that helps
