Smittle Creek Nature Hike, Lake Berryessa

Join Ranger Mike for a leisurely hike on the Smittle Creek Trail along the western shoreline of Lake Berryessa. Enjoy wildflowers and get some fresh air and exercise while learning about the natural and human history of the area on an easy-to-moderate 2.6 mile, one-way guided hike. The trail travels through a shaded Blue Oak woodland, affording hikers scenic views and peaceful surroundings. Meet at the south end of the Smittle Creek Day Use Area parking lot, off of Berryessa-Knoxville Road. Vehicles can be shuttled for those wanting to hike one way. Hikers may stay with the Ranger for the entire 3-hour hike or leave early if they choose. Bring a lunch to enjoy at the lake.

Very enjoyable and also very informative. I was very sorry that I had to quit early and could not finish the whole walk due to prior commitments. Many thank to the rangers. They were wonderful.

Thank you Ranger Victoria for hosting this event! It was a wonderful afternoon and Ranger Mike is so knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. My only regret is that I wasn't in better shape to enjoy the entire length of the trail. What I did enjoy was memorable.

Does anyone know what the fastest/easiest way to get there from Sacramento? Looks like 80W to 505N to 128W to Knoxville Road Might be the fastest, but I have not been there before so I don't know.

Thank you. Is the meeting place pretty obvious?

      April 11, 2014

    • Victoria P.

Yes - once on Knoxville Road, you drive until you see Smittle Creek Day Use Area on the right. We meet at the south end of the lot.

Are dogs ok for this hike?

    April 11, 2014

    • Victoria P.

Unfortunately we discourage dogs on the ranger led hikes because we like to maximize our chances of seeing wildlife.

Haven't heard from anyone who wants to be picked up in W. Sac. I can also pick up in Davis. Please call prior to Saturday morning. Not after 9 pm evenings.

Hi, Do you have room. I live in Sac. But I could meet in Davis. I may call if I don't hear back from you - sorry for late notice, I thought this was meeting downtown at 8a.m. to arrange rides. - Julia P.

I don't want to drive all the way, myself - I prefer not to drive, just to pay, lol.

I can take 1 or 2 of you in my car. I will be coming from the airport on Saturday, as I have to drop off relatives for an early flight. Is there a W. Sacramento meeting spot just off the freeway?

    April 6, 2014

  • Susan C.

I'd be interested in carpooling either from Sacramento or at the Nugget in Davis...anybody else?

    April 6, 2014

  • Victoria P.

For those wanting to carpool, go ahead and communicate among yourselves to figure out what is best. I'm not familiar enough with Sacramento to set up meeting points. We often have people coming from Davis and Winters too, so keep that in mind if you have extra seats...

At last! A hike on a Saturday that I can do! I am so grateful to Victoria for posting this. Am I the only one that works during the week and goes to church on Sunday?
