Flippin' Friday Sugar Pine Mountain Trail - 6.5 miles Int/Adv - Appelgate

Well, looks like I have a free morning this Friday and wondered if anyone might be up for yet another Flippin' Friday hike.

If we don't have enough interest on this hike, then I may postpone it, but let's see how many would like to join in at such short notice.

Nestled in the foothills near Meadow Vista, the Sugar Pine Mountain Trail makes a loop that circumnavigates the Winchester Country Club. This is an excellent training trail for anyone needing to prepare for rocky Sierra Nevada trails. Sugar Pine Mountain Trail circumnavigates Sugar Pine Mountain, coming closest to it at the halfway point on this hike.

Your trail starts out on the left side of the entrance to Winchester Country Club and ends behind you on the right side of the entrance. Just as its name implies, this mountain is home to sugar pines. The sugar pine trees you see here are growing at their lowest extent in elevation.

Distance: 6.5 miles
Elevation Change +1000 - 1000
Difficulty : intermediate

Directions to trail head
I80 towards reno, to clipper gap exit 125.
1 mile north on Placer Hills road
Turn left onto Sugar Pine road drive .1 mile
Park at the turnout on the left, the trail head is .15 miles around the curve up the road on the left side of the winchester country club. Signed with a 0 mile trail marker.

To clarify on where to park per Sherpa, who has done this hike: parking is along the road(left side) before the Winchester subdivision-- any overflow can be in the church parking lot near by--- we started the trail just left of the entrance

What to bring:

Poles, good shoes, hat, sunscreen, layers, water, snacks, dogs are okay, and of course a good sense of humor!

See you on the trail!

  • Carla glad a few of you gnarly regulars are able to make the hike tomorrow. Good news is, there's no rain in the forecast. Bad news is, I'm still fighting a nasty cold, so you'll have to take it easy on me. See you all tomorrow morning...On this trail we can check out how the 1% live!!!!
