Wintertime Painting & Sketching Hike

Come along on a Wintertime Painting & Sketching Hike in and near Locke, Ca. This will be joined by a few artists from two other meetup groups, the Sacramento Plein Air Painters and the Sacramento Sketchers.

Quick color sketching along the way.

A hidden pond reveals itself only in winter when the trees are bare.

Climbing trees is optional.

Sleeping in trees, however, will be forbidden.

(Our lovely and agile model, above, is my 18 year old daughter, Mary Sand.)

Hike starts at 10 a.m. Meet in Locke in front of Al the Wops on Main Street. Don't be late!

This is a mostly level 1.5 mile hike. There is one 20' long somewhat steep narrow path up a levee hill and some optional off-path prickly narrow paths.  This is a guided hike with an optional quickie watercolor demo-lesson along the way.

Watercolor kits, blank postcards, pencils and brushes will be provided. Approximately 60 minute hike (including 3 ten minute stops to make quick, small color sketches along the way) winds up back on Main Street, Locke for informal optional, friendly group art critique.

Your well-behaved, very obedient dog on a leash okay to bring along.  Well-contended children welcome as well.

(Any small donation you might wish to contribute for art supplies will be much appreciated.)

Rain or high winds will postpone this event to a future date to be determined. Meanwhile, think sunshine!

Please email me with any questions or post them here in comments.

Thanks, Martha Esch

Just absolute bliss being out in the levee/delta area and learning about Locke from a wonderful woman like Martha. I just would have liked to take things slower -- more time for sketching/painting and walking. I thought we were going to stay a lot longer and do more painting, see the town. Yes it was good to learn how to do fast sketching and I learned from others but I would have liked to have had more time or more opportunities for that. Don't get me wrong, it was mind blowing to see Locke (I took some pics).

Dan, Thanks for the nice compliment And thanks fr joining us. ...During the warmer months, I host this same hike at a slower pace. This annual winter hike is intentionally planned to last about 60 to 90 minutes round trip and the consensus among the group (before you joined us en route) was to keep it moving since it was cold outside. For more painting opportunities, please check out our other meetups on Sacramento Plein Air Painters and Sacramento Sketchers.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
