  • This location is shown only to members

The historic Barbary Coast Trail in San Francisco is an excellent way to see the city and learn some history.

Walking Length
6.5 miles of mostly gently sloping hills with one long haul up Hyde Street being the most strenuous part.

Trail Markers
The trail is designated by 170 bronze medallions and arrows embedded in the sidewalk. Watch out! Some are hard to spot.

Trail Highlights
• Birthplace of the Gold Rush
• Largest collection of historic ships in the U.S.
• Pony Express Headquarters site
• WWII submarine
• First Asian temple in the U.S.
• Barbary Coast-era shanghaiing den
• Old Mint, once the “Fort Knox of the West”
• Gold Rush-era buildings
• Oldest Catholic cathedral west of the Rockies
• Gold Rush Museum, featuring stagecoaches and Gold Rush mining implements
• Mansion built by Silver King James C. Flood
• Hyde-Powell Cable Car Line

What to Bring
*Money - We will take an extended break at Fisherman's Wharf, and get another snack before we leave.
*Good walking shoes
*Layers - You never know what the bay area weather will be.
*Hat and sunscreen.

Sorry, no dogs

For those meeting in SF (5th & Mission-Old Mint) please text or email me your phone #. We plan to be at the trailhead between 10:30 and 10:45am. My number is[masked]

Directions to the Mint
After you cross the Bay Bridge, take the 5th Street exit and go right. Parking all day in a garage costs around $30. There is no more free Sunday parking, and street parking is for four hours maximum only. Most of us will take BART.

Directions to the Lafayette BART station

1) Go west on P Street to the freeway
2) Follow the signs to I-80 West / San Francisco. Stay on I-80 past Fairfield.
3) Take I-680 South / San Jose. Stay on I-680 through Walnut Creek.
4) Take CA-24 West / Oakland
5) Take the Central Lafayette-Moraga exit (#13)
6) Left at the first intersection onto Deer Hill Road
7) Go past Oak Hill Road & turn into the parking lot on the left

(If you pass Happy Valley Road, you’ve gone too far. If the parking lot is full, exit back onto Deer Hill & park in the lot on the other side of Oak Hill.)

Carpoolers pay $3.25 per hour, per person to their driver plus toll fees (~$15).

So did anyone record our distance and elevation gain? I like to keep a log.

Thanks again, Shannon, for leading us on a very interesting hike. It was a really nice group of people as well.

I came up with 8.8 miles on my GPS. I did walk over to the submarine after lunch, so your actual milage may be slightly less. ;-) http://www.mapmyhike....

Thanks, Craig. Maneeja and I bolted up to Ghirardelli Square for a quick ice cream cone after lunch, so I'm gonna go with 8.8 for us too!

We'll leave the 11th & P Street parking lot after we get the carpools organized at 8:30. It's 74 miles to the BART station, 99% on freeways. The address there is 3601 Deer Hill Road / Lafayette.

Hikers & Co. carpools are organized at the meetup location (11th & P this time) unless stated otherwise.

If anyone is thinking of taking the ferry from Vallejo, it leaves Vallejo at 10AM and gets to SF about 11AM. This means you would not be able to meet up with the group at 5th and Mission. A day pass on the ferry is $24. If you are a senior (65+) it is $13.

I will have already gone on a coastal trip with Trail Mix on Sat. I would certainly want to try this one in the future.
