MD-AT section hike from the Gathland SP to the Weverton Cliffs
• Date: Dec. 8, 2012 (Saturday)
• Time: 10:00 AM
• Meeting: Weverton Cliffs parking lot
We will meet in the Weverton parking lot and shuttle to the Gathland State Park. At the park, the GATH’s War Correspondents Arch, a National historic monument, will welcome the hikers. The Arch was built by George Alfred Townsend, a Civil War journalist, in 1896. GATH was his pen name.
We will hike 6.7 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The trail is rated as moderate. We will stop by the Ed Garvey shelter for snacks. The shelter was built with covered windows on the 2nd floor where information about Edward Garvey is maintained.
After hiking 2.1 more miles, we will be at the Weverton Cliffs to enjoy a nice view to the Potomac River. We will have lunch at the Cliffs before coming down to the parking lot.

Near the Gathland State Park, on the West Main Road between Buckittsville and the Park, there is an interesting spot of “Gravity Hill.”
Direction to the parking lot from Frederick:
Take Rt 340 West/South for 14.7 miles
Make right onto Rt 67
Make the first right onto Weverton Rd to the parking lot on your right.
Nice, scenic with a good view. Thanx Sooni for taking us and for all the great pictures:)

Hi Toni,
I finished the 42-mile AT-MD a few times from Penmar to Harpers Ferry (N to S). The wholle 42 miles were devided into 4 sections from N. Among 4 , this 6.7-mile trail is part of the last 4th section and easier compared to sections 1 and 3. If you climb up from the parking lot to the park (S to N), there is 0.9 mile uphill. There are some ups/downs, but since we are going down the hill, I can change to "moderate." Everybody has a different opinion.
This section does not a have a place to stop in the middle. Once you start, you need to finish it.
Thank you,

The Appalachian Trail link lists this hike as difficult but you have described this as gentle/moderate slopes. Does it change from difficult to moderate if you hike from north to south?

I'm thinking about joining this hike. Is anyone driving from the Howard county / Columbia area and want to ride share?

Thanx Sooni, just wanted to know for my friend exactly how long it was, since she hasnt hiked much. And are dogs allowed?

Hi Lyndal/Toni
The hiking distance is 6.7 miles.
For the 42-mile AT-MD, this is one of easy sections with gentle/moderate slopes. The reason we do from N to S is for the 0.9 mile down hill from the cliff to the parking lot at the end. After taking a break for the nice view, it is better to climb down than up.
Happy trails!

I have done moderate 10 mile hikes with the Mid Atlantic Hiking Club but I am concerned if I can handle the inclines...Are there difficult inclines to ascend?

Hi Lyndal,
No cash for the shuttle, no entrance fee to the park.
This is a one way hike from North to South which is easier for this section. We will shuttle to the park by the minimum number of cars to transport all participants.
The latest weather forecast shows 62 degrees with possible couple of showers which sounds a good day to hike.
Wear bright color vast and hat for the hunting season. Hunting is not permitted within the corridor, but there are adjacent private lands.
See you there.

Hi, do we need to bring cash for the shuttle or entrance to the park? And how much?
