Hi Everyone!

Join me for a hike on April 20th at 10am at Sugarloaf Mountain, followed afterwards by an optional glass of wine/soda at the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard

For those who have not been on one of my hikes before, if you would like to attend this event, please be aware of the following rules:

  • This hike is NOT for beginners! It is a 5-6 miles loop hike with steep incline at some points. We walk at a moderate pace [masked] miles per hour)
  • I will stop the hike if any participant incurs an immobilizing injury (ex: sprained ankle, dehydration) so the injured person can be attended to. Hikers will have the option of continuing the hike on their own or waiting to finish the hike with the group, after we are able to get the injured person to safety.
  • I do not use a sweeper and I usually do not take a headcount. We always look out for one another as a group but I can not prevent individuals from leaving the hike, if that is what they decide, so my hikes tend to be more fluid than other meetup hikes.
  • My hikes are geared towards individuals with moderate-expert hiking experience who are comfortable walking independently at times. If you would not be comfortable walking this trail/location with only a friend or two, this likely is not the hike for you.
  • Bring snacks, plenty of water and dress in layers.
  • Please also post a comment if you need a ride/offering a ride so other members can coordinate with you.
  • Pets are OK but the rules of Sugarloaf Mountain state they must remain on a leash at all times.
  • I will solicit for VOLUNTARY donations after the event. Please know that 100% of all donated funds will go towards funding the DC Metropolitan Hikers Meetup Website.
  • Hike will be cancelled if rain is expected so please look for updates. I will post a final update no later than the night before and, if members still would like to walk regardless of weather, I'm game! Let me know.

Event Details:

We will meet at the West View Parking lot at 9:45am. It's a little tricky to get there so make sure you follow the directions below:

From N-270, take the Hyattstown exit, circle around and continue on Route 109; turn right on Comus Road to the Sugarloaf Mountain entrance. Once at the entrance, follow the 2nd road from the right (you have to pass a gate and there's a sign of private property). Go all the way up and turn LEFT when you see the sign of WEST VIEW. Proceed till you see the West View parking lot.

We will begin the hike at 10:00 am sharp from the parking lot, following the blue/white trail to the blue trail until we reach the White Rocks Overlook. We will stay at the WRO for no more than 10 minutes to allow people to grab some water, a snack and just take in the view. We will then continue along the blue trail until we return back to the Westview parking lot.

I plan to visit Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard afterwards for a glass of wine and for those who would prefer, wine tasting and possibly live music. There's a $5 fee for tasting. This was fun last time and feel to bring some snacks for the vineyard or you can buy from the store there.

Carpool is strongly encouraged to save gas money and save the environment. Please post carpool options as soon as you can! Riders need to contact drivers to discuss pick up time and location. Follow the directions provided below so you won't get lost.

I was at the entrance at 10AM but could not find the group. Parking is difficult and the leader should specify exactly which parking lot where we can meet.

Pete and Sharon, I live in Alexandria and I am willing to meet at your place. I am also interested in having a glass of wine after the hike. I'm a first timer so I don't really know how this works but if either of you would be willing to have me along let me know via email. [masked]
    THANKS!

I'm considering attending, unless it is raining and ugly. I guess Meetup doesn't give you the option of RSVPing a "maybe".

I will be coming from NW DC and will be driving so I am happy to take any other folks. My dog will be in the way back so I'll have 3 spots. Let me know :)

Sunday would have worked out better for me since I have another obligation for Saturday afternoon. Hopefully, will be able to join you next time on the same hike.
