Mary's Rock

I have led roughly 150 hikes with various groups. My leadership style is different from most hike leaders.

HIKING EXPECTATIONS: There are normally a mix of those who have hiked with me b4 and those who have not. Hikers may initially know no one but that changes quickly and we ALWAYS have a great time.

If there are problems along the trail, we ask all hikers to help each other. Otherwise hike at a pace which works for you; break when you want. We will spend time understanding the trail, the blazes we'll follow, and where to look for arrows the fastest hiker puts along the way.  The slowest hiker picks them up on the way back.

HIKING TRAIL:
Views from Mary's Rock are unsurpassed anywhere in Shenandoah National Park.  Mary's highest point is reached by climbing to the top of the huge rock outcrop.  This rock is grandodiorite and geologists have determined its age to be over 1 bill ion years!

We will hike 4 hours plus a stop at Mary's Rock for lunch.  We will start from Panorama's upper parking area and follow the white blazed Appalachian Trail south.  At 1.9 miles (about 1,200' elevation gain at that point) there will be a green arrow to show you a left turn to continue along the AT.  Going straight will get you to Mary's Rock but that view is for later.  We will determine how long we will hike the AT before returning for lunch at Mary's Rock.  If you are a faster hiker and familiar with the trail I will show you what to do next.  It is normally windy where we will lunch.  Lunch will be your opportunity not only to eat but take some spectacular fall pictures.

DRIVING INFORMATION: Arrive 15 minutes early to form carpools as we leave Centreville Park & Ride (map above) promptly.  When you RSVP indicate whether you need a ride or can offer rides. The more specific information you include the more likely to get a ride.  If you take public transportation, use www.wmata.com to more accurately pinpoint time you'll pick up/catch a ride with another hiker.  Give your driver $7 for gas; more if you are also getting a ride to Centreville.

DONATION:  Please take into account $5 FOR CHARITY when deciding about this hike. Donations are given to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club www.PATC.net which maintains our hiking trails. PATC is a non-profit, tax exempt public charity as described in section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

SAFETY: When hiking, I carry my phone, driver’s license, medical insurance card, credit card, cash, headlamp & whistle.

YOUR PICTURE: Smile, click. I require a picture of each hiker for emergencies so don't be surprised when I take your picture

HIKING SHOES OR BOOTS are important.

HIKING POLES are helpful. My favorite are Black Diamond.

WATER: ALWAYS bring more than you think you need.

FOOD: It's important to have healthy snacks to munch as you hike.  Also bring your lunch so you may stop along the way, eat it and perhaps enjoy a spectacular view.

CAMERA: But of course!!

HUMOR: An absolute must.

PETS: Not allowed on this hike

I am driving from Vienna. I could pick someone up from the Vienna metro about 750am. I could either ride or drive to the trail.

Hi, I would love to do this hike. Are there any more open seats in someone's car?

    October 25, 2013

  • Sue

I am coming from near the 495/95 intersection, so could pick someone up from the green or red line along the way, and can also drive from Centreville. I don't promise to clean the kid-debris from my car first though, but will try. I too am a slow hiker.

I can meet at any Orange metro station on Sunday. Can anyone pick me up? :)

    October 25, 2013

  • Jayne Hiking A.

The good news is Metro opens at 5am Sunday for the Marine Corps Marathon. The not so good news is that there will be road closings so check your route to make sure there are no problems getting to Centreville Park & Ride.

Any ideas on how to get from central DC to Centreville? I would love to carpool

    October 23, 2013

    • Jayne Hiking A.

Dave. Sue has posted a note below & offered to pick up people from the metro. I suggest you email her to coordinate when & where.

I am a slow hiker and have been having knee issues (so this may not be appropriate, though it sounds glorious). What is the minimum length of the hike - have you reached Mary's Rock at the 1.9 mile distance? And what is the altitude gain? thanks.

    October 21, 2013

    • Jayne Hiking A.

I'm not sure this is the right hike for you Carol. The elevation gain is about 1,200' up those 1.9 miles. Most will take about an hour to get to that point and the hike is 4+ hours so they will hike another hour before turning around. If you only went that far, you'd have a long time to wait for others.

thanks. that was my thought too, but figured I would get more info since it seems like a wonderful location.

I am slow hiker and haven't hike with you, Jayne, before but I hiked at Mary's Rock twice in the past. I am looking for a ride from Centreville and happy to chip $7 :)

    • Jayne Hiking A.

No problem about speed I'll explain on the hike. Carpools are formed at Centrevillenot before.
