Weekend at PATC's Cliff's House near SNP

  • Jun 8, 2012 · 3:00 PM

Join me at Potomac Appalachian Trail Club member Cliff's House Cabin, a couple hours from the DC area, for a weekend of hiking Friday June 8 - Monday June 10.

Hiking: You are welcome to hike with me and/or create your own hikes. Not sure what I'll see but I plan to check out both the Powell Mountain and Meadows School trails off VA759 hiking up to Skyline Drive. Albina & I did the Bearfence Mountain rock scramble just across Skyline Drive and plan to do it again this weekend it is such fun.

Black Rock an easy hike with outstanding panoramic views and interesting geology. The trail loops around the summit of Blackrock, an eroding mountain of talus comprised of Hampton quartzite. To reach the top of Blackrock one must leave the trail and scramble over broken rocks. The summit elevation is 3,092 feet. Blackrock owes it’s appearance to rock tripe.

Other nearby hikes I've enjoyed are: Riprap Hollow, Jones Run Doyles River, Hawksbill Franklin Cliffs, Three Falls, and Humpback Rocks. So many options so little time

COSTS: You must pay $40 even if you choose to stay less than 3 nights before you are confirmed.

#1 Jayne has paid and is confirmed

#2 Johnny has paid and is confirmed

#3 Albina has paid and is confirmed

#4 Aidin has paid and is confirmed

#5 Edna has paid and is confirmed

Refunds: Please understand refunds are complicated. If you change your RSVP and another hiker does not send me payment for your spot, a refund is not possible.

There is an entrance fee to the park.

FOOD: Meals, snacks, liquids etc. are each hiker’s responsibility. I'm not a cook so if someone wants to organize evening meals great. There is electricity, pumped spring water, range, refrigerator/freezer and microwave along with a wood stove and some cooking utensils.

WATER: Pumped spring water should be fine for cooking & coffee but do bring enough drinking water for hiking, etc. or a way to filter your water.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS: There are 6 mattresses but I suggest you bring an air mattress (in case mattresses aren't the greatest or you want to sleep on the porch), sleeping bag, pillow and ear plugs.

CABIN LOCATION: PATC Map 10 F18 in Weaver Hollow on VA607 near VA 759 Jollett, VA. I will send detailed directions to those attending.

DRIVING: We may access the cabin after 3pm on Friday and must leave before 3pm Monday. Use meet up postings or email hikers directly to form carpools. If carpooling, please provide your driver $15 for gas to/from cabin plus $ to/from hiking.

SAFETY When hiking, I carry my phone, driver’s license, medical insurance card, credit card, cash, headlamp & whistle.

HIKING SHOES OR BOOTS are important.

HIKING POLES are helpful. My favorite are Black Diamond.

CAMERA But of course!!

HUMOR An absolute must.

PETS are NOT allowed.

This was my first DCMH meetup and I couldn't have asked for a better weekend! The group was super welcoming and supportive of all hiking levels. Jayne was a fabulous organizer and the location was beautiful!

This is the 2nd 'trip' I've organized and I'm delighted with its success. Cliffs House was beyond expectations and hikes, though challenging to find, were wonderful new adventures. Everyone was very accommodating and considerate of others. It was certainly a surprise to me that we had one room which was kitchen, living room, dining room, sleeping room combined. However $40 for 3 nights couldn't be beat. Thanks everyone for a superb weekend.

The cabin was ten times better than I expected. It has everything my house has and more.. except for my comfortable big bed, of course. Jayne, a great host and a great organizer, picked two great hikes that made me questioning my logic of going west to hike. She also let me eat all of her food. I was my great pleasure to meet Edna and Sonya, two great hikers, whom I hope to see and hike together again.

Thanks so much for all information Jayne. Also who wants to do carpool? I am going Friday afternoon and back on Monday. I can drive 2 people or use a ride.

Hi Jayne. Are we allowed to make fire over there or it is like Shenandoah?

Hi I am interested in joining, but I don't have a car and can't leave until Saturday morning. Is anyone else considering leaving Sat am? I can leave super early so we beat all traffic.

No problem. Although I was a bit too quick and didn't check my calendar, so have to back out. :( Next time. Thanks for organizing this!

RSVPing yes does NOT guarantee a spot. Sending $40 via Paypal does. :-)
