Weekend Trip in Bruce Peninsula NP - 7/19-7/23

Pay the deposit here!

This event is triggered by United airlines having a $229 Dulles-Toronto airfare ($89 one-way). So if you're interested in this event, please book your flights ASAP.

RSVP: Your RSVP is not valid until you pay the deposit.

Where: Bruce Peninsula National Park (4.5 hours from Toronto). View these images

We will meet at a car rental place in/near Pearson airport at 5:30 pm.

When: 7/19-7/23. My flight is on Thu, 19 JUL 12 from IAD 3:22 PM to YYZ 4:52 PM ($89). I'll leave Toronto at 11:30 pm on Sunday 7/22 on the Megabus, arriving back in DC at 11 AM on Monday - 11.5 hours ($18). This means I only miss 1.5 days of work. The majority of you will fly back on Monday morning. If you want to stay until Tuesday, let me know before you book your flights because if 2-3 other people are interested, then you have a full car load. Otherwise, you would have to pay for a day of car rental yourself.

What: Hiking. The original plan was to hike Bruce Trail, but Bruce Peninsula has grottoes, coves, bays, beaches, swimming holes, ferries, boat rides, and other things. So I'm open to other activities. We will plan together and see how much we can pack them in.

Who: I choose trails by how beautiful they are, not how long or how strenuous, so sometimes they are a walk in the park and sometimes quite challenging. You should be able to hike 8 miles comfortably. That way if we stretch out to 10-11 miles, you'll be okay. At the same time, we'll probably have a base camp, so if you're tired, you just return to the camp. The map below shows that it has trails from easy (green) to very strenuous (red).

Lodging: Five people will stay in basic cabins (all filled up - bring your own bedsheets). The rest will camp at Lake Cyprus campground for the first two days - no shower facility but you can swim in the lake and it has a beach. The last night we stay at Tobermory Village Campground.

Flights booked:
Johnny - camping
Alma - camping - Billy Bishop
Sena - camping
Malcolm+1 - camping
Susan - camping - Buffalo
Iolaire - camping - Buffalo
Volky - camping
Jennifer - cabin
Kimberly - cabin
Haruko - cabin

Cost: DC-Toronto transportation is up to you. It you take the bus, that's $40. Car rental is about $100/person + gas. Three night cabin and 1 night hotel is about $200. Three night camping is about $75 or less.

We meet at the car rental place in Toronto at 5:30 pm and drive to Bruce Peninsula. Those who stay in cabins must arrive before 10:30 pm (gate's closed at 10:30 pm).

Friday - the goal is to get all highlights out of the way.
Take a glass-bottom boat tour at 9 am to Flowerpot island where we hike for 3-4 hour.
Return for lunch around 1-2 pm.
Go back to Cyprus Lake and go to the grotto (climbing required). If we have time, we tackle
the Georgian Bay Trail or the Marr Lake Trail (short).

Saturday: We hike the Bruce trail from Little Cove back to our Cyrus Lake Campsite (10 miles, very strenuous). We will put a car around mile 7 and 9 in case we want to bail early. The trail itself is not that tough, but the views from the shoreline is fantastic so people don't actually stick to the trail but hike along the shoreline.

Sunday: We start from Indian Head Cove (near Cyprus Lake) and continue where we left off yesterday on the Bruce trail. Today it's strenuous but not very. Again we will leave a car around mile 7 and 9.

We leave Bruce around 5 pm and arrive back to Toronto between 9-10 pm. Please do not book any flight leaving earlier than 11 pm on Sunday. If you take the Megabus back, then you go to the bus station. If you fly back in the morning, then you check in the hotel.

Travel Options: There's more than one way to get to Toronto.

1. Fly: As I mentioned before United has $229 airfares.
2. Bus: Megabus ticket to/from Toronto is as low as $5.
3. Fly & Drive Combo: We have a couple of members fly to Buffalo, then drive from there.

An organizer's nightmare. Have you ever been heckled by Amish people? Yes, that's how bad. After 3 people dropped out at the last minute, five hours of plane delayed, an unwanted/unscheduled night in Toronto, half a day lost on a three-day trip, we've got heckled by Amish people, who ran the campground. In the future, I either won't plan international trips or make sure that everyone stays at the same place and does the same activities. Our cell phones didn't work over there. Talkie walkies didn't work. Communication was impossible. The only time I knew where everyone was was at 10 pm when everyone was in their respective cabins or campsites. During the day I didn't know whether everyone found their trail heads, able to check in their campsites, cabins or hotels. Things could have been a lot worse if I didn't plan things 2-3 steps ahead to minimize the impact. I'd like to thank everyone on this trip for being so self-sufficient that the activities still went smoothly without me.

    Hi Everyone,
I have a quick question about the flight on Monday. What time is the flight back to DC which everyone booked? I am thinking about 10 am flight. But, did everyone book 7:20 am flight?
