Puerto Rico: 11/9-11/13 (Veteran Weekend) - Buy airfare NOW! $238.40

  • November 9, 2012 · 9:00 AM

Buy airfare now! $238.40. You only need to take off work two days: Fri & Tue

We're migrating south in the winter. It's Puerto Rico this year.

I don't have a plan yet but it will be an adventurous trip. We will spend a day hiking in El Yunque, kayaking in the Bio Bay of Vieques Island to see the sea glow under the stars. El Yunque is the only rainforest on US soil, with waterfalls and swimming holes. The remaining time we will do these activities: ziplining, horseback riding on the beach, sunset kayaking and snorkeling, and sunbathing.

The key here is that the airfare is on sale, and like all airfare sales, I don't know when it will end, sometimes a few hours, sometimes a few days. So grab it as soon as you can, not a minute later. The one I book is $238.40 on travelocity. You can also book on Orbitz.

Here are the flights details:

Fri, Nov 9, 2012 Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) to  San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)

Depart: 09:00am - Arrive: 07:33pm

Tue, Nov 13, 2012 San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) to  Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA)

Depart: 07:10pm - Arrive: 12:35am (Next day)

So if you want to go, book NOW! before the deal is gone.

Cost: Airfare - $238.40
Lodging and car rental: I'm expecting to be about $300-$350 (hopefully less). Ideally I would like airfare + lodging + car rental to be under $500 but will see how expensive Puerto Rico is.

Who can join? On most trips I know one or two people previously, but the majority I meet for the first time. So don't hesitate to sign up even if you haven't met me before. As long as you're nice and easy going, we'll get along fine.

Flights Booked:
Johnny
Judy
M

Warning:

Since I bought the airfare and invited you to join me on the trip, I learned that Puerto Rico is not all roses. Someone informed me that the place has been in turmoil with drug and gang in the past two years. I'm not too worried about this since people say DC is dangerous.  I'll plan our trip around those bad neighborhoods though.

I also learned that even though it's a commonwealth of the US, they operate differently. Puerto Ricans get better services, higher priority, than us. They drive aggressively, and traffic congestion is three times worse than ours.  So I'm going to rely on you guys to get us there safely (I'm Asian. I can't drive).

This may be one of our worst and best trips ever. So I need your help, from each and every one of you, to put it off.  Please be independent, be patient, go with the group, go with the flow.  Be on time, be ready, be alert, and be aware of your surrounding.  If you fall behind, try to catch up. Help each other out. Help me out!

I got the tickets. |Going there, I got the same flights (Depart at DCA: 09:00am - Arrive: 07:33pm), but coming back I will be leaving early (Depart at SJU: 03:15 pm - Arrive: 09:17 pm). Super excited about this, I always wanted to dance salsa in PR :)

For those on the waiting list and anyone else interested in this trip who didn't get a spot please see the discussion board - http://www.meetup.com/hiking-162/messages/boards/thread/25768992#80291502. Thanks!

I did. Increasing the limit is highly unlikely. I didn't know only have the people had bought tickets. Ugh... I was ready to buy mine but when I went to RSVP the limit was reached. I need to go back and check the ticket prices in case anyone drops I guess... :( Johnny and I talked about someone leading a second group, which I posted on the discussion board, but still no bites on that. He sent me another option (not sure if that was for me or the group) but I will post that and see if there is any interest also. Would have loved to Salsa and hike with you guys! :) Thanks Kalyan!

Kalyan, my flight was delayed. I will arrive around 10p. If you care to wait around and share a taxi please let me know! :)

Flight delayed... :( I won't arrive in San Juan until 10p.

Can we add Salsa dancing to the list of activities?. I cannot in in good conscience go to PR and not dance salsa!! :)

    August 15, 2012

    • Johnny

Kalyan, go ahead and search for a good salsa place. I think we have Saturday night free and I don't think we need to wake up early Sunday morning.

Heads up, for those that want a real experience of night life my family recommends El San Juan Hotel and Casino with a Salsa club, large lounge/bar area, and a more modern/euro dance club. For real experiences ask locals for Quioskos (Kiosks) for food and music. Great local treats and usually musicians (weekends only)

  • Johnny

Sorry for the confusion. We will definitely do El Yunque, kayak tour, and the beach trip. My question is which one do you think will give us the best bang for our bucks? Also, having an official guide may be better than exploring on our own.

    October 7, 2012

    • Selam

Not sure if you have a company in mind but I read about this company in a guide book: http://www.abessnorke... 40 per person.

      October 8, 2012

    • Johanna

Head's up, that one is not ont he main island, you all would have to take a ferry to Vieques. Go to Las Cabesas de San Juan in Fajardo PR. There are about three Kayak companies that do the biolum bay there.

My RSVP was changed to "No", hopefully they will change it back because my flight has been paid for a while back. :( Anywho, I arrive in San Juan at 2:30pm on Nov.9 and depart at 7:05pm on Nov. 13. I can ride with someone. :)

I'm from Puerto Rico. Yes, there are bad areas, but as long as you stay on the touristic areas you will be fine. Driving is crazy, but then again the DMV area doesn't drive any better so you'll be fine. I suggest y'all make sure to stop at Piñones to try out the local food. I wish I could join y'all but I'm saving my trip to P.R. towards the end of the year to celebrate the New Years and have a ball for a week. Have a safe trip! If you need any additional info feel free to contact me.

Can another trip be planned sometime in the coming months for those that were not able to make it on this trip?

    October 10, 2012

Are you coming on the same dates? Feel free to come and hang out with us. I just don't want to handle a large group when things go wrong.

      October 24, 2012

    • CK

Yes I will be arrived around 11pm on the 9th and leave on the 13th.

  • Selam

I vote for the catamaran trip as well. I've done it before in Puerto Rico and it's awesome (if we're going to the same place, but I don't think you can do wrong whatever island we go to). I assume they have snorkeling included, right?

My flight is scheduled to arrive at 1:25 PM so I can take a taxi to the hotel. How do I send you the money? A check?

My arrival time is 7:35pm. Anyone cares to share a cab to the hotel? Johnny, what would be the name of the hotel we'll be staying so I can tell the driver? Also how much should the cab fare approx be if you know? do their cabs take US dollars or CC??
If you don't know the asnwers to the last two, it's fine, I can ask/look up once I have the name of the hotel. Thanks.

Thanks, Valerie for checking into it. May be we can share a cab on the way back ;-)

A friend who grew up in Puerto Rico said,
    1. El Yunque US National Forest System: This place is way too beautiful and feels like Avatar movie forest, so should be first preference.
    2. A bicycle tour of Old San Juan, the second oldest city in the U.S.: This is pretty place and bike ride should be fun.
    3. A kayak tour at one of only six bioluminescent bays in the world: This is must go.
    4. A catamaran day trip to one of the planet’s best beaches: It is just another beach and not one of the best beach for sure. I personally vote this if we do scuba dive.
    5. A ride on the world's highest zip line at ToroVerde Adventure Park : Not adventurous enough.

I vote for the El Yunque US National Forest System and Kayak tour as well. The Old San Juan is one of the prettiest places, it would be great fun to take a bike your around the old city.

      October 3, 2012

    • Melissa

First vote - El Yunque National Forest, 2nd vote - Old San Juan bicycle tour. It would be great to fit these both in with the kayak tour at one of the bioluminescent bays!

My first vote is the catamaran, second would be the kayak. You and I are on the same flight, so hoping to share a car w/ you! I will send you the $400 via paypay as a gift tonight. I'm so in need of this trip!! Can't wait!!

OMG, for the outbound flights, Delta changed my seat twice already!!! and they got my money back in MAY!!!Ggggrrrr!! Has anyone else had the problem?? There are 93 more days before the departure and God knows how many more times I get bumped again??!! Any recourse suggestions anyone??

    August 8, 2012

  • Johnny

Don't worry. Most of us are on the same flights. So whatever happens, it happens to all of us. We still arrive around 7:30 pm, so that's good.

    August 8, 2012

Ah...I'm too late?! Just joined the waitlist.

    June 26, 2012

  • Johnny

Valerie, do you need a rough itinerary or a detailed one with actual hotel info? I have a rough idea of where we should spend our time but I won't have all the actual info for another month since I have three other trips (Bruce Peninsula, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon) to plan for before this one :-)

    June 12, 2012

  • Johnny

That's what it says on the first line of the event description. haha
Sena, I don't know about the second part of your question... yet. If we stay near the airport that night, then sure. If we rent a car and drive off somewhere, then that wouldn't work. If 3-4 people arrive at that same time, then you guys can rent a separate car to go. You're likely to stay on the north side of El Yunque, near the visitor center, which is about an hour from the airport.
