Thanksgiving Day Hike-Billy Goat Trail Section A (moderate pace of 4.8 Miles)

  • Nov 22, 2012 · 10:30 AM
  • Great Falls Park, MD Side

Let's burn some calories before the big feast. We're going to hike the Billy Goat Trail section A! This will be a circuit hike of approximately 4.8 miles. We'll start at the trail head from inside the park and come back via towpath. We'll keep a moderate speed without too many stops except for water and snacks. I aim to finish the hike in 2 and 1/2 hours.

The trail is challenging in some areas. Keep your eyes on your feet when walking ! Some portions require you to use your hands to climb over boulders, and in one instance, up the 40 ft rock staircase, so be sure you’re up for that.

Meet on the trail head from inside the park at 10:30. Do not be late or you'll have to catch up. My cell is [masked], for emergency use only. There's a fee to enter the park so bring cash. (Although since it's a holiday it might be free but bring cash anyway.)

Distance: around a 4.8 mile round trip
Elevation Gain: 200 ft
Hike Time: 3-4 hours
Difficulty: Strenuous

Bring: Camera (to capture the fall colors!!), Sunscreen, lots of Water, Snacks, Friendly attitude

Wear good shoes that have traction, flexibility, a sturdy toe bed, and won’t slip off.

Dogs prohibited on Section A.

I was one of the folks who got lost amongst the many, many meetup groups there that day. However, I was able to hike along with some others in the same boat and enjoyed myself just the same. Lesson learned and I plan to attend another hike!

Adrienne, It was tough finding the group. The trailhead was a 15 minute walk from the parking lot and anyone not familiar with the park would have had trouble, as did I. I arrived early but still missed the start, but caught up half way with help from others in the same boat.

Several of us waited at trailhead till 10:40. Nobody else called to let me know that they were coming. Also I did indicate the meeting point is trailhead from inside the park where you have to pay an entrance fee, and there is only one entrance you need to pay to get in. I don't know how much more clear I can be. Perhaps some people should read event write ups instead of assuming things.

leader left before. Half the hikers arrived. Many we're confused about the precise meeting point. Two of us wrote in to clarify where the exact meeting point was, but we never received replles.

Anyone going from downtown DC? I'll need a ride...

Hmm it says there's one space, but it won't let me take it. When I change my RSVP from waitlist to Yes, it doesn't kick me over to pay.

    (1) Are we meeting at the Visitor Center where it indicates "A" on the map link?
    (2) And is the $5 parking fee going to charged on Thanksgiving?

Any chance there might be an opening or wait list. Would love to go?

When you say meet at section A trailhead, do you mean the trailhead closer to Great Falls Tavern / Visitor's Center, or the other end of the trail closer to Old Angler's Inn?

    November 20, 2012

    • Lin

The trailhead closer to visitor center.

We won't have a sweep for the hike so lets try to stay together as a group. It's your own responsibility to catch up with the group if you're too slow. We will take breaks to wait for the slower hikes, but we won't wait forever. So please make sure you can handle the hike before going on it. Thanks!
