Hey all,

One of our members, Victoria, is one of the 40 chosen by the Breast Cancer Fund to climb Mt. Shasta in June. Lets show some support by donating $5 to the hike. All money collected will be sent to support the Breast Cancer Fund’s work. If you have questions Victoria will be at the hike to answer them. I would prefer not to carry too much cash on the hike, so Paypal is activated for your convenience. Please pay before the hike.

If you would like to show individual support, please go to Victoria's website for donation:
https://www.kintera.o...

Weather is looking great (60's) on Sunday so come join our group's largest hike yet. Its a bummer that Jayne won't be able to join us due to family matter. Lou will be co-leader of the hike. I can't wait to meet new faces and see old friends.

Be @ Turkey Run Parking Lot C1 before 10:00 am to begin hiking POTOMAC HERITAGE TRAIL just off George Washington Parkway between Roosevelt Island & 495

Come one, Come all toD.C. Metro's largest Hike ever. After a year of coaxing Lin to join me on a hike, she has marked her calendar. TOOOOOOOO encourage her attendance many of the assistant organizers are joining us AND we hope you will too!! Here's your chance to meet those who volunteer their time to provide you wonderful hikes throughout the year!!

This event is for any hiking level We'll first hike to 495 & back to the parking lot -- 4 miles (2ish hours). For those not yet tired, we'll head towards Roosevelt Island parking lot increasing speed, decreasing the breaks. I've yet to make it all the way to Roosevelt Island & back -- maybe this time.

http://www.nps.gov/ar... Most of the route is fairly level, with short, steep ascents and descents. The many streams are crossed by stepping on rocks; they can be muddy year round. In every season of the year, this trail offers hikers a tranquil walk through the "wilderness" inside the Beltway.

$0 Park Entrance, $0 Parking Ah, a chance to donate more to charity

Directions www.google.com Your location to Turkey Run Recreation Area .
Turkey Run Parking Lot C1 is between 495 & Roosevelt Island just off George Washington Memorial Parkway. It's closer to 495 and is accessible from both the north & south. DO NOT TAKE POLICE STATION EXIT. Take Turkey Run Park exit to the first parking lot.

Weather: I have never canceled a hike but if I do I will post cancellation the evening before http://weather.weathe...

Hiking Boots or sturdy shoes are always recommended

Public Restrooms are closed till April, but there are lots of trees

No Dogs Please honor my request due to the large # expected

Difficulty Anyone can do the shorter hike....the length, pace and # of stops for the longer hike add to the difficulty

Miles: 4 miles (2ish hours) to 495 & back; then up to 16 miles round trip to Roosevelt Island but it's easy to turn around at any point

Hiking Stick: Often I'm the only one, but I trip easily

Water: Suggest @ least a bottle

Food: Protein bars, fruit, etc.

Camera: But of course!!

Humor: An absolute must

Amy's Human Pyramid Photo: Amy's coming & promised an even greater photo!!!

Hellow fellow hikers! Just sending a special thanks to Lin and all of you for supporting breast cancer prevention by participating in the hike on Sunday! I am climbing 15,000ft Mt. Shasta in June to raise awareness and sponsorship for cancer prevention. I will battle high winds, deep snow, altitude sickness while wearing crampons and using ice picks to summit. Nuts, right!?! But, it's a great cause, and I appreciate your support!! :) (Lin has linked my personal website above.)

It is wonderful this hike is to support Breast Cancer. I will be with you in spirit as I'm in Kansas City helping my sis-in-law who was just moved to Hospice -- Breast cancer initially now into her liver :(

Super mad that I'm going to miss out on all the fun, but I dropped my curling iron in my lap this morning and am having trouble wearing pants. (don't laugh!) I'll be thinking of everyone and I'll see you next time!

I can offer up to three rides from Vienna Metro or points west along I-66 (I am coming from Haymarket). I am planning on doing only the first part of the hike, so if you're planning on doing both parts, you may want to find a different ride. Meet in the kiss & ride area on the south side of I-66 at 9:00 AM. I'll be the guy in the black hat.

FYI - be sure to wear solid shoes with good traction. I trekked around Rock Creek a bit today and it was damn wet and muddy ..... with some as yet melted ice here and there. Doubt the PHT is much better.

Have fun! And don't let the high tide catch ya .. :-)

definitely record breaking! it was great finally meeting some of the AOs and seeing old friends. despite the mud, we had a great time!
  • Melanie
Beautiful day! Muddy trail made the easy hike more interesting.
  • Gary
A regular mud fest, but great fun and a great group!!
  • Amy
It was a fun event, I have always wanted to hike the trails along the Potomac so this was a good intro. (Despite the mud!) Would like to go back in spring or summer. Met some nice people. Only drawback was it was probably difficult for so many attendees to find parking (I found a space b/c I got there early enough)
  • Fontaine
Wet, slippery, sloppy, muddy but great weather and nice people and hike for a good cause.

Perfect day for a hike. Met some nice people I hadn't seen on other hikes. I think the ankle-deep mud made it kind of fun, though it was a little distracting. But its February, so I wasn't surprised :) This was my first time on this trail and it's really beautiful.
  • Betina
The ice and mud made this a challenging and good first time hike for me. Thanks to the organizers and to that guy who got me a walking stick.
  • Rosie
The trail was muddy and icy so it made it somewhat difficult to hike. But that's not anyone's fault.
