Canoeing the Kish!

Ahh, the Kish! We had a great time on this trip the last three years and it's definitely worth while to go back again this year. It's reasonably close; it's beautiful and pretty pristine. The riverfront is lined with silver maples, sycamores, and willow trees; higher from the water's edge thrive an abundance of red & white oaks and hickory trees which are home to many songbirds. The wetlands provide an ideal habitat for many aquatic species including beaver, river otter, turtles, and frogs. The section of the river we'll travel through is almost completely surrounded by forest preserves.

We'll be canoeing with Larsen's Landing, they'll drive us upriver to Espenscheid Forest Preserve where we'll start our 5 hour journey down the Kishwaukee. We'll stop about halfway down the river, probably at Kishwaukee Forest Preserve for a light snack and to stretch our legs a bit. From there we'll continue to head down river until we arrive at Larsen's Landing. We'll meet at Larsen's Landing at 9:30 am. They'll start us off with some tips and paddling instruction; get everyone fitted with a PFD (yes, I know they suck but we have to wear them) and shuttle us out. Be sure to bring along the sunscreen, a lunch or snack and plenty of water for the day. A waterproof bag is also helpful.

After our canoe trip, Larsen's will be hosting us for a barbecue along the riverside at about 3:30. The $50 includes the cost of the afternoon barbecue. If you have special dietary restrictions be sure to let us know! Be sure to do a "no-rain" dance or any trick you know that'll help guarantee us good weather for this trip.

Special note: Camping is available at Larsen's Landing if you want to stay over on Friday and/or Saturday night. You can arrange that on your own with them, the cost is $10/person and includes firewood. Just be aware that this is a very rustic campground with porta-potties, no showers, and no running water.

Be sure to bring:

  • Water
  • Snack or lunch
  • Sunscreen (I don't think we'll need bug spray yet)
  • Bathing suit (just in case you get wet!)
  • Change of clothes. Dress in layes for the paddle, too.
  • Strap or twine to secure your belongings in the canoe. (You don't want to lose anything, but more importantly I don't want to litter the river with anything that floats away from you)
  • Water shoes. (Old tennies are fine, but PLEASE no flip flops. You never know what you might step on in the river, so protect your feet top and bottom.)
  • Beer or wine if you wish for the BBQ

Payment

  • Deadline for all responses and cancellations is 8:00pm on Sunday 4/19. Any cancellations after that date will receive only a partial refund, as we will have given the outfitter and caterer a final headcount.
  • Any refunds due to bad weather will be contingent on decisions made by the outfitter and the caterer.
  • Once the event fills up and is closed, you can put your name on a waiting list by RSVP'ing NO and writing an appropriate comment.

Directions:
Take I-90 W for approximately 60 miles to I-39 S / US-51 S toward Rockford. Stay on I-39 for about 3 miles and then merge onto US-20W. After another 4 miles merge onto IL-251 S / 11th ST toward Rochelle. Go another 3 miles and turn right onto New Milford School Rd. Larsen's Landing will be on your left hand side.

Carpooling

  • If you need a ride or can offer a ride, please put a note to that effect in your response
  • Also include a general description of where you will be driving from
  • Contact other hikers to arrange your own carpools based on the comments you see. Check back often, as others sign up.

The outfitter was experienced. It is a family operation and they made you feel very welcome. The Bar B Que afterwards was relaxed and the food from the grill was good.

This was my first canoeing experience and it all that I had hoped it would be. Not even the rain detracted from the day. I don't expect this to be my last experience!

The trip was great! Everyone was fun and the rain held of for the perfect amount of time. I guess the rain dance worked. Especially great for a first timer, because those who are more experienced are helpful and willing to teach.
Thanks everyone for a great and fun event. And, thanks for the special homemade cookies :)

Wow! Could the weather have been any more cooperative? A little rain to start, a little rain to finish, and nothing in between. With the heavy stuff holding off until we got home!

Thanks to Betsy for baking, thanks to Alexandria for asking if I was planning to schedule something that day, and thanks to everyone else for coming out.

Someone left behind their insulated lunch box with sunglasses and sunscreen inside. If it's yours, let me know.

What a great time. Great people, great conversation. Despite less than optimal weather - super fun. Nicely organized by Jack who made sure that everything went without a hitch. Thanks Jack. I'll post pictures later today.

The trip was great! Well organized, lots of fun, good price for the activities and food. Only suggestion, it would have been nice to do a quick intro of everyone (even just names) at the start. Since we were in canoes, it was hard to learn names until the end.

This was my first canoe trip since I was 9 ... a LONG time ago! ;)

Everyone was friendly, the event was very well organized, and the leaders made sure to give everyone guidelines for a success canoeing experience. I can now honestly say ... I AM HOOKED ON CANOEING!

Also, this was Jack D's birthday. It said a lot to me that he chose to spend his birthday organizing and leading this great event. Happy Birthday, and thanks to Jack, Becky and all the leaders!

Thunderstorms in the forecast did not make an appearance, and cloudy skies ended up making it a more enjoyable temperature. This was a very nice experience, nothing too harrowing to handle, but enough of a current to make it a little work. The group of people was awesome, as usual, and the BBQ spread was great!
    Happy Birthday, Jack!
