Hike Waterfall Glen

  • May 25, 2013 · 9:45 AM

This hike will cover the 9.5 mile loop that surrounds Argonne National Laboratory. It’s an easy trail of crushed limestone but there are no real shortcuts on the loop.

~ the trail might be muddy, depending on how much rain we get this week. I recommend wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Also bring sunscreen, as--right now--it is predicted to be 70s and sunny!

~ hiking distance: 9.5 miles. We will look for a spot to stop for a trailside lunch along the route.

~ hiking time: 3-4 hrs. We will likely be sharing the trail with some bikers.

~ bring water, snacks and a lunch to eat trailside.

~ after hiking, those who are interested can find a local restaurant or bar to enjoy a quick snack or drink

Directions: From Chicago city take I-55 west (signage may read south but you will be heading southwest) past both 294 and 83 (Kingery Highway) to Cass Avenue. Take Cass Avenue south to Northgate Road (I think it’s the 2nd right), right on Northgate and then 400 feet to the parking lot. We’ll meet at one of the picnic tables between the trailhead sign and the restrooms.

We will meet at 9:45 and start hiking promptly at 10:00 am

Waiver: Read this waiver. By attending this hike you and your guests agree to the terms and conditions of the waiver.

Unfortunately I got lost on the way there (GPS couldn't find it and I misinterpreted a key MapQuest instruction) and arrived at about 10:30. I decided to hike the loop anyway and had a wonderful, peaceful walk through beautifully fragrant, green woods, marsh, and prairie. The hikers and cyclists numbered just enough that it never felt crowded even on a holiday Saturday, but not so few that I didn't feel safe hiking alone. All were friendly, considerate of one another, and helpful (yup, I took a wrong turn on the hike, too). They keep the trail very well groomed and pretty well marked. Even the wrong turns on the way there became something positive. I learned a lot about 95th street (after managing to get off of 55 onto 90/94, Cog Hill golf course (after turning left instead of right on 83), and the Argonne Lab entrances not to use when you come into the Forest Preserve from the south :):):). Sorry I missed everyone and look forward to hiking with the gang next time!

Turned out to be great hike! No rain, not sweltering, only a few muddy spots, and a forest preserve that had lots of actual forest. And the hikers were all friendly and kept pace together :)

One of the greenest forest preserves I've seen in this area and lots of very old trees. A great place to spend the day.

Wish we could join you instead of running a 5k. It sounds like a beautiful hike.

I'm in Buffalo Grove (NW suburbs). Anyone want to carpool? I can drive or go with you if convenient.

I'd be interested if you don't mind having a dog in the car. I live in Rogers Park, on the North Side of the city (close to Evanston).

I love dogs but Rogers Park would be very much out of the way since I 'd be coming south on Rt. 290 and you are about 20 miles east. Hope you're able to find another ride.

I'd love to participate but have no car, live on the North Side (Rogers Park) and will be bringing my dog. Anyone interested in splitting the cost of a Zipcar?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
