Let’s Explore Northside Islands

  • Apr 22, 2012 · 10:30 AM

This eleven mile walk will cover four islands on the city’s north side as we venture from Lincoln Park to Humboldt Park. We will traverse across some parks, industrial and residential areas, alongside railroad tracks on what will someday be a bike trail and, mostly, along commercial city streets keeping a moderately brisk pace.

We’ll meet on the South Pond bridge in Lincoln Park, also known as the Lester E. Fisher Bridge, which is south of the zoo and northeast of the Farm in the Zoo.

Bring something to drink and a snack if you think you might need it. We’ll walk at a moderately brisk pace and take short breaks on Goose Island and in Wicker Park. I'll also comment on a few points of interest during our walk. The CTA’s #72 North Avenue bus connects to near both our starting and ending points so bring a CTA card or bus fare.

Please read the Waiver in the Files section. By attending this hike you and your guests agree to the terms and conditions of this waiver.

For those that are not familiar with our meeting place, the map on the link below details where South Pond is in Lincoln Park and we’ll meet on the bridge that crosses the pond.

One of the better ones I've been on! Saw several things I hadn't before, which are basically in my backyard (and have lived in the City since 1987!). Nice group of people, pretty day ... enjoyable way to spend a Sunday!

Thanks for the positive feedback. A great day. Sorry again if the misadventure caused anyone any stress.

Excellent hike! We had such a good time and I might add, truly unique. Very nice group of people. Thanks so much Kurt for setting this up, we are so glad we went along. Yes, Amiris did go salsa dancing later that night.

A real urban adventure! 'Cemita's Puebla' is the really good sandwich shop at 3619 W North Avenue.

For parking you can pay at the zoo lot (entrance off Fullerton) and you probably want to park towards the south end of the lot or at North Avenue Beach lot. For non-metered street parking I'd suggest trying the neighborhood west of Clark or west of LSD b/w Fullerton and Diversey.
We will not be going by the Armitage station but will pass by the North Avenue station.

From Lincoln Park which direction will you be walking. I am thinking of taking the CTA to Armatage. Will you be walking past this station?

Is there parking close to South Pond and if so is it free or paid? :)

Dogs are welcome! Obviously you would not be able to take public transportation though from the end of the walk which is about 4 miles from our meeting point. Maybe a cab or more walking!
I hope to do the hike in about 3.5 hours.

Is anyone coming to this from the South Bend area? I'm interested in attending and would like to car pool if possible
