Lowden-Miller State Forest

  • Aug 11, 2012 · 10:45 AM

We're going to hike about 10 miles in the Lowden-Miller State Forest. I have never been to this park before, so it is possible we may end up doing more miles than intended. I don't know what the terrain is like, so please bring a map of the park in case you need to shorten the hike.

Please note this park is about 2 hours west of Chicago.

"Nestled in the Rock River Valley, just 3 miles south of the town of Oregon, lies a 2,291-acre wooded area that is one of Ogle County's most beautiful and historic sites. Its scenic qualities come from 120-foot bluffs along 3.5 miles of riverfront forested with hardwood and pine trees"

Exact meeting location: Parking Lot #4:,-89.360905&spn=0.008983,0.018947

What to Bring: At least 2 liters of water and a lunch to eat.

Waiver: Read this waiver. By attending this hike you and your guests agree to the terms and conditions of the waiver.

Carpooling: Please use the comments section to offer or request rides from the general group.

Very nice park, a hidden gem. I wish I could have stayed for the 2nd half, but my ride had to be somewhere.

I'm surprised this park isn't more popular. The woods are beautiful. Very nice hike with nice people.

I have room for 1 or 2 if you can get to Oak Park or somewhere close.

I actually grew up in this area, sort of. I now split my time between Chicago (lakeview neighborhood) and the sauk valley area (this part of northwestern illinois where the park is) and I've always wanted to go hiking at this park but never got around to it. Unfortunately I got plans at Montrose Beach that weekend. sad face.

I can however tell you there are a lot of great parks in that general area: in addition to the Lowden-Miller State Forest, there is the adjacent Lowden State Park, across the river is Castle Rock, and then my favorite Franklin Creek State Park (its hilly, rocky, and you have to walk through the crik multiple times). I hear White Pines is great too.

    Wish I could come!
