Canoeing the Kish!

Ahh, the Kish! We had a great time on this trip the last two years and it's definitely worth while to go back again this year. It's reasonably close; it's beautiful and pretty pristine. The riverfront is lined with silver maples, sycamores, and willow trees; higher from the water's edge thrive an abundance of red & white oaks and hickory trees which are home to many songbirds. The wetlands provide an ideal habitat for many aquatic species including beaver, river otter, turtles, and frogs. The section of the river we'll travel through is almost completely surrounded by forest preserves.

We'll be canoeing with Larsen's Landing, they'll drive us upriver to Espenscheid Forest Preserve where we'll start our 5 hour journey down the Kishwaukee. We'll stop about halfway down the river, probably at Kishwaukee Forest Preserve for a light snack and to stretch our legs a bit. From there we'll continue to head down river until we arrive at Larsen's Landing. We'll meet at Larsen's Landing at 9:30 am. They'll start us off with some tips and paddling instruction; get everyone fitted with a PFD (yes, I know they suck but we have to wear them) and shuttle us out. Be sure to bring along the sunscreen, a lunch or snack and plenty of water for the day. A waterproof bag is also helpful.

After our canoe trip, Larsen's will be hosting us for a barbecue along the riverside at about 3:30. The $50 includes the cost of the afternoon barbecue. If you have special dietary restrictions be sure to let us know! Be sure to do a "no-rain" dance or any trick you know that'll help guarantee us good weather for this trip.

Special note: Camping is available at Larsen's Landing if you want to stay over on Friday and/or Saturday night. You can arrange that on your own with them, the cost is $10/person and includes firewood. Just be aware that this is a very rustic campground with porta-potties, no showers, and no running water.

Be sure to bring:

  • Water
  • Snack or lunch
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • Bathing suit (expect to get wet!)
  • Change of clothes
  • Strap or twine to secure your belongings in the canoe. (You don't want to lose anything, but more importantly I don't want to litter the river with anything that floats away from you)
  • Water shoes. (Old tennies are fine, but PLEASE no flip flops. You never know what you might step on in the river, so protect your feet top and bottom.)
  • Beer or wine if you wish for the BBQ

Payment

  • This will be the first time we utilize Amazon Payments for an event. You will be guided through the process of setting up your account, so have your credit card handy. This is the preferred payment method for this event. Please help us out.
  • If it is absolutely necessary that you use PayPal instead, the account you send to is [masked]
  • If using PayPal, you will still have to RSVP "No" and include a comment, then send payment.
  • I will change you to a "Yes" as soon as I can after I receive payment, but remember that using Amazon will immediately count you as a "Yes." That is especially important to know if the event is close to filling up.
  • Deadline for all responses and cancellations is 8:00pm on Tuesday 6/24. Any cancellations after that date will receive only a partial refund, as we will have given the caterer a final headcount.
  • Any refunds due to bad weather will be contingent on decisions made by the outfitter and the caterer.

Directions:
Take I-90 W for approximately 60 miles to I-39 S / US-51 S toward Rockford. Stay on I-39 for about 3 miles and then merge onto US-20W. After another 4 miles merge onto IL-251 S / 11th ST toward Rochelle. Go another 3 miles and turn right onto New Milford School Rd. Larsen's Landing will be on your left hand side.

Another great time. I think the heavy winds were a bit more of a challenge than the rain was, but you gotta build that experience somehow, right? Thanks to all for coming out and making this a fun trip again. (Only one swamped canoe, I think that's a new record for us on the Kish!!)

A great group of people and thanks to Jack for a well-organized event. This was my first time canoeing the Kish and I loved it...great level of challenge and we were fortunate to have encountered only a brief bout of bad weather.

Five stars all the way, I liked the challenge of the wind and rain but could have done without the thunderstorms. And a great group of people as usual to spend time with. Thanks Jack =)
