Spring Lake Reserve / Schaar's Bluff in autumn

The hike is on at Schaar's Bluff! We will convene in the parking lot closest to the visitor center by 10 a.m. on October 5th. Please be on time. The park has two regions of trails, one to the west of the main picnic area and one to the east. We'll split the time between the two areas, stringing together the various short loops to walk 7-ish miles total. Hiking will be easy to moderate. Please bring a bag lunch, which we will stop to eat either in the picnic area or at one of the lookouts on the bluffs.

This is a little-known but beautiful park. The fall colors will be gorgeous, the old stone bridge we'll cross picturesque, and the views of the river and Spring Lake from the bluffs outstanding. Seeing bald eagles and osprey is likely, and if we're lucky, there will still be some of the great fall bird migrations going on, perhaps even the breathtaking pelican migration.

Regarding dogs, due to the terrain on this hike, no dogs, please.  We may allow a few dogs in future hikes.

Great hike Ben! This location is a real jewel and you brought us all over. Thanks for persevering despite the weather (which ended up being perfect!)

Great hike, everyone. No rain. Great idea to hike there, Ben, thanks so much for thinking of that place!

Hiking in one of my favorite things to do, but I can never get my family members to go with.

Sorry, conflict and I didn't put in my smart-ass phone. Have fun!

Todd emailed me... Their plans changed, even though the weather looks to be WONDERFUL. Must be Ben's luck. Down to 18...

Ha ha Steve, if we do come out fortunate with regard to weather, it is clearly YOUR luck at play! :)

I am optimistic about the weather. It may not rain at all.

More on the directions... on my phone, based on the address, the map pushpin comes up on the model airplane field, but you'll want to turn left before that, and head west. Any car-poolers from EP or the I-494 corridor?

    October 4, 2013

  • Kathy

I won't be able to make it. Next time... :-)

...With much help and guidance from the ever-modest Steve. Carpooling also available from Minneapolis.

I'm interested as I"m in st. Paul but it depends on weather ;p

I will post the directions to the park momentarily. I will be assuming that everyone will be coming from the North and can get to the referenced stretch of hwys. 52 and 55. Please feel free to send me a message if you need further information.

The principle is to hike rain or shine, but having at least some improvement to the current forecast would not be unwelcome. Think good thoughts!

See also Steve's post below. With so many people on the waiting list, it will be useful to know how much the weather is likely to affect turnout.

I'd hike in a sprinkle, if it's downpouring, I'm gonna have to pass...

I am sorry about the late cancellation but I broke my pinky toe as I was running through the kitchen and caught it on a chair leg. I may need a few days before I get out on the trail. I hope someone can take my spot!

Yikes, sorry to hear! I do that all the time. Toes!

    DIRECTIONS:
Get on the section of highway where US Hwy 52 South & MN Hwy 55 East run together. Veer left at the split (just past the ugly power plant) to stay on 55 East. Go about 4 ½ miles to the junction with Cty Rd 42 (Mississippi Trail). Turn left on 42. Go almost 2 miles, then turn left onto Idell Avenue. (There will be a big sign for Spring Lake Park Reserve / Schaar's Bluff.)

After 1/2 mile, turn left - that is, do not go straight to the model airfield. You will shortly see signs for 3 parking areas: one by the playground and picnic area, one by just the picnic area, one by the visitor center. We'll meet up at the middle of the three, by the picnic area, a spot is nicely located near both the east and west sections of trails, and near the restrooms as well.

Don't fret finding the right parking area on your 1st try. The 3 turn-offs and corresponding lots are very close together. You can walk between them. Send me a note if you wish to have my cell phone number just in case.

For those currently on the waiting list for this hike, I highly recommend Steve's outing this Saturday in Eden Prairie. There is some chance I will also repeat this outing once more in October if weather seems favorable to it and interest remains high.

I will post driving directions early next week. As we are headed south and east of Mpls/St. Paul, people coming from any points west or north should feel free to post inquiries about carpooling. I am in south Minneapolis and would be happy to give anyone(s) a ride.

The hike was good, even in a little rain. Just four of us went. Generally, we appreciate the hikers who will hike in any weather, so that open slots in the hike are not wasted.

Another hike is probably coming, people... Perhaps Saturday or Sunday morning at 9 am, probably the LRT thing again (it's convenient for me!) that takes us into the Hesse Farm Preserve that Harold and Pat donated (I think). I talked to a City person about it recently. Also emailing this to Wait List people.

If anyone lives in this direction, I plan to take 212 from Chan through EP and pick up I-494.

Hope that there will be room for me. I am In if there becomes a spot.

    September 22, 2013

It's best to stay on the waiting list if you're interested. There will be other hikes. This is for anyone,... if you enjoy hiking and want more hikes, consider becoming an organizer.

      September 23, 2013

Added note on the weather: since a number of the trails are dirt, we'll have to evaluate the situation if there are torrential rains, due to the risk of injury or us causing damage to the trails. Let's hope that scenario doesn't arise!

Wow, what an amazing response this hike has gotten. If you have RSVP'd "yes" and your plans change, please change your response ASAP out of courtesy to those on the waiting list. Updates will be posted as appropriate.

Looking forward to seeing everyone for a great outing on the 5th!

No matter what the weather is like, it's good to have appropriate footwear, such as boots or shoes with good traction and support. We don't anyone slipping or falling, especially if you carpool and have the keys. Logs, sticks and some stones can make bad decisions as steps, especially when they move.

This sounds fun and a good workout. Do you go in all kinds of weather & anyone coming from the North?.

All kinds of weather even snow and rain , unless it's dangerous weather

Good idea, Ben. I'll have to find a weekend that works for this. I currently believe that the weekend of Saturday the 5th of October will work for this. Will the colors be good by then? It's probably the same weekend as the TC Marathon.
