Let's Hike the Mystery Caves of Southern MN!

11am is tentative, anyone wanting a different time please comment. The caves are always 48 degrees so no concern for hot weather later in the day. Cave tours run every half hour on the hour and up to 20 people can go per tour. We can reserve a tour after we meet and know the exact total of people. There are enough tours running Saturday that we can get our group in. After signing up we will hike the state park until our tour time. Hike can range anywhere from 6-8 miles. We will decide the trails to hike as a group by majority. Tours are 1 hour and $10 per person.

Location (carpooling recommended):
Located 40 miles southeast of Rochester, Minnesota. From Rochester, take US Highway 63 south to Spring Valley, then take MN State Highway 16 east for 6 miles to County 5. Take County 5 south 6 miles to the Mystery Cave turn off. Then travel 2 miles on the gravel road to the cave. Carpooling suggested. I will not be able to drive anyone there as I will already be in the vicinity for work. I am willing to drive anyone back to twin cities area if needed.

Rained almost the whole drive down to the park. Once there it rained for about 15 more minutes then dried up. Overcast and humid. Perfect for hiking. Beautiful park, we saw deer, lots of interesting bugs, and great views. Thanks for a good hike CJ.

    Visitor Alert!

Detour May Affect Access to Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park

Major reconstruction of U.S. Highway 63 between Stewartville and Spring Valley, Minnesota will require a detour for visitors travelling south from Rochester towards Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park and Lake Louise State Park.

For visitors coming from the Twin Cities and other points from the north, Forestville/Mystery Cave staff recommend using U.S. Highway 52 to Fountain, MN, then to travel west on Trunk Highway 80 to Wykoff, MN. Visitors should follow signs south of Wykoff to reach Forestville/Mystery Cave. See detour map attachment.

To reach Lake Louise State Park, visitors should follow detour signs from Stewartville, MN.

Visitors originating from the east, west, or south should not be affected by the detour.

If you get lost call the park and ask how to get to the cave entrance. Apparently it is common that the internet and GPS gets the entrance wrong.

I'm sad that I won't be able to join you all, but I will be doing massage, as usual on summer weekends, at a campground just west of Madison, WI all weekend.

Is your area code really 613? Or should that be 612.

Should we meet in the Walmart parking lot again? Remember 35W and County road C, not Silver Lake Road.

Since no one has commented on the time. Let's plan to meet at 11am sharp in the parking lot of the mystery caves. Note: the caves and state park are not the same location.
