Veterans Day Holiday Hike

UPDATE 11/03/12 Venue Selected!

The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Louisville Swamp, and Carver Rapids

Route: From the parking lot trailhead, we will head out keeping left for some nice prairie views, oak savannah, bottomlands and river views, with a stop at Jabs Farm for a brief trail lunch and circle back. Expect a fairly "Avid" pace 3.5mph+/- with some off-trail hiking.

Length: Approx. 8-9 miles

Duration: About 3 hours

Type: Marked, mixed-use trails with some off-trail

Surface: Mixed meadow and woodland trails, plenty of mole hills, rock, dirt and grassy areas; sand likely & mud if it rains.

Conditions: Unknown, probably dry; well past peak fall colors but nice long views and plenty of oak varieties retain their leaves through winter.

Difficulty: This hike will be more strenuous than a typical TCHM hike, more like a typical Avid hike due to the combination of elevation changes, speed, and overall length of the hike.  If you are new or just returning to hiking or are not confident in your ability to hike at a brisk pace for 3 hours with few breaks, this hike is not for you.

Hike Time: 9:30 AM, and we start on time.  A good practice is to get the mobile number of at least one other attendee in advance, so if you are late you can call and hopefully still find us.

No-Show Policy: No-shows will be found, tarred & featherd (not really, but we expect you to RSVP only if you will be there and to change your RSVP well in advance if you find you cannot make it.) Attendance will be noted and monitored. If something comes up too late to change your RSVP, send me an email ASAP.  No-shows will be noted, and repeat no-shows can anticipate being banned from future events I organize or - possibly - removal from this meetup.

Scenery: Minnesota River Valley, farm ruins, mixed oak savannah, meadow and dense riverside woodland.

Amenities: None! No water, no toilets, so come prepared to deal with it.

Weather: We hike rain, snow or sunshine and cancel only in the event of a severe weather warning.

Recommend to bring: Water, food for mid-hike trail lunch (or hi-energy snack), footwear and clothing appropriate to weather & trail conditions; a compass might be a good idea as sometimes the river, leafs or snow will erase the trail.

No Kids, No Dogs, No +1's: Only registered members of this meetup may attend; others will be asked to leave.

Do not smoke or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs on this hike...never thought I would need to say this but after last week that changed.  Do it and you will be asked to leave.

Parked vehicle security: Sadly, break-ins can happen. If you can't live without it, leave it at home or bring it on the hike; if you can't do that, keep it hidden.

Carpool: Please post with times in the pre-event comments section after you RSVP. Woodbury car pool will leave from Penn Cycle at I-494/Lake Road at 8:25 AM.

This is a joint venture of both Avid Hikers and Twin Cities Hiking Meetups.

Thanks for organizing, Mike. I'd never been here and loved the opportunity to explore the area. Brisk weather, great pace and good company. A fabulous way to spend a holiday!

Hi, I thought I saw on my emails that this was canceled but I may have been mistaken. If it wasn't, I'm sorry I didn't cancel in advance. Thanks

Would like to do this hike, but work that November 12th so if anyone wants to do it on a weekend, that would be wonderful. Don't know enough about this venue to do it myself but would be grateful if one of the organizers would be able to do it.

Maybe Murphy? Good hills there. Or spring lake park for something new? Hoping the location is within 40 min of Lakeville as I have school drop off at 7:20. Thanks for coordinating!
