Mt Emma, Old Mt Emma, & Cole Point

This location is shown only to members

Please let me know what start time you want, I don't care. Right now I put 8 am.

Meet at 8 am, drive to trailhead
Start hike at 9:00
Done hiking by 5:00
Back to cars at rideshare by 6:00

Mt Emma and partners lie in the northern part of the San Gabriel mountains. It is named after Emma Pallett, the daughter of a ranching family around Devil's Punchbowl. Cole Point is named after a former Californian U.S. senator.

You should read Jerry Schad's description of part of this hike: http://tinyurl.com/cq.... We should get great views of the Mojave Desert as well as (hopefully) a bunch of wildflowers. Needless to say, as usual, this will be a strenuous hike.

Distance ~12-13 miles,

Elevation Gain ~ 4500 - 5000 ft gain.

Pace: 1500 ft gain / hour

Terrain: Use trail along ridge

Difficulty: 9/10

Advanced

If you have not hiked with me before, you must message me to go from waitlist to a "yes".

For all trips, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring lunch, lots of drinks, warm clothing (depending on altitude)

The trip "leader" is a volunteer and not a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.

Joining LA Hiking hikes is entirely voluntary and participants assume the full risks associated with the activities. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous hike, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, and navigation equipment for the conditions. The LA Hiking Group and the individual organizers make no warranties about the safety or supervision of these activities.

would require us to do the Bridge to Nowhere hike, then hike up 4000 ft to the mtn.

John: Did Iron #2, Condor and Fox #2 from the north a few years back. If it's hot it's a grind. Went to Iron first, then Condor and Fox; tagged Gleason on the way out (not sure why - had to check it off the list, I guess). The trailhead is the highest part of the hike, making the trudge up the road at the end of the day a real, well... trudge. Not my favorite day. I can email the .tpo file if you want.

Joe, I don't see the change even if you sent us an email.
Can I suggest something else than Senior Fish after the hike? I am afraid my body is mercury saturated by now :)

Do you want to do Cole first and the hike over to the Emmas? Kentucky Springs Canyon Road was closed the last time I was there because of the shooting range. I hiked up to Cole from near Aliso Canyon Road turn off. We can have a short car shuttle from there and Mount Emma Road to avoid the long trek back to the cars.

my plan was to hike up to cole (the way you did) then take the ridge over to the Emmas...can we not cross the fireroad? then proceed to Mt Emma and old mt Emma. plan was to take the same way back. could descend from Old Mt Emma with car shuttle, but less miles and less gain

sure, we should be able to cross the road...if we can dodge the bullets...

here's a map of the trek, we'll probably do something similar but turn around at Old Mt Emma. http://www.gpsmountaineering.com/emma,oldemmaandcolepoint

Can print that, or get the Pacifico topo pdf from the website

Wow this one definitely was a big time workout. Some parts were the steepest that I've ever done as far I can remember. Roller coaster hikes are not my favorite but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was nice to see some wildflowers popping with color

It should be Mt Cole, Mt Emma, Old Mt Emma, back to Mt Emma, and Mt Cole. For me the down hill was great. As far as the up hill goes I thought my time in this world was over. And the shooting noise from the pistol range did little to chase this thought from my from mind. How ever I did survive, and look forward to the next adventure ( attempt on my life ) with Ze`.

Despite some confusing pre-hike information :-) it was a very nice day and hike. Great job everybody.

A solid 9/10 hike...The way back was exhausting...but all in all...I like it
  • Véro
Of course, our organizer is reaching perfection :) I had no idea I was going to ride a roller coster today. Nice challenge, nice views.

Another underestimated hike! Regardless of the gain, this hike didn't seem so bad. Would I do it again? Perhaps. Except after Cole, instead of going north, I would like to hit up Pacifico and Roundtop. But that's something altogether different. Anyways, I still think we should have hiked down to Lancaster and ordered a pizza.
