Echo Park Urban Scavenger Hunt

Join us for a really fun urban scavenger hunt in the Echo Park/Elysian Park area near Dodger Stadium. It is a "strategy game" with the objective of getting as many points as possible. We did this last year and it was a lot of fun and we definitely got some great exercise as well.

The Host & Event:
The event is hosted by Los Angeles Orienteering Club who do mostly out-in-the-woods type orienteering but sometimes they do urban versions as well. The club's events are well organized and I have generally had great experiences attending them in the past.

Click here to learn more about orienteering and the club.

This event is a so-called "score-o" type event where the goal is to collect as many points as you can in a fixed amount of time, in this case 2 hours (1 hour time limit is also available). You will be looking for a bunch of objects around the area marked on a detailed map and answer questions related to them to prove that you have found them. Each object is worth a certain number of points and you can find them in any order. The objects further away are worth more points while those closer to the start/finish are worth fewer points.  You won't have enough time to find them all so there will be some strategy involved including special bonus points. You'll lose points rapidly if you are late back to the finish.

Click here to learn more about the event.

The Plan:
We'll meet at Chango Coffee Shop at 8:30 AM and grab some light breakfast/coffee together. This way we'll be able to find each other (these events sometimes have a lot of people).

During breakfast I'll give you some general information on orienteering, as well as, tips and strategies etc. Then we'll set up some teams with 2-4 people or so in each. You're welcome to go solo too if you prefer. It's advisable to set up teams with people of similar fitness level and degree of competitiveness, otherwise you may not be pleased with your teammates.

At about 9:15 AM or so we'll head over to the start, register our teams and get started.

Some participants are quite competitive and run the entire time at a high pace. Others, take their time and walk with their kids. This is really for everyone who wants to get some exercise and do something fun at the same time.

Time Required:
2 hours of orienteering (1 hour is also an option).

What To Bring:
- $13 in cash ($8 for club members)
- Running shoes & shorts etc.
- Hydration system (best) or bottle with water or Gatorade etc.
- Compass (they'll have those for rent)
- Watch to keep track of time
- Sun screen
- Sun glasses
- Cell phone
- Consider hat
- Consider camera

- A red pen to mark on the map

Directions:
Click here for Google directions to the Chango Coffee shop.
Click here for Google directions to the start

Parking:
There should be  street parking available near the coffee shop. After breakfast we'll drive about 1/2 mile and park inside the park near the start. Parking there should't be a problem as there are a lot of parking spaces.

No Shows:
It is inconsiderate to the organizer and anyone on the waiting list to RSVP and not show up, therefore I am registering no-shows. For this event you need to change your RSVP to "No" minimum 30 minutes before the start of the event. If you have multiple no-shows on your record you may not be admitted to events where there are people on the waiting list.

Ok, the results are finally in. As I suspected Valentina and I did quite well and got 3rd place (out of 46 teams) in the 2 hr team division with 670 points (10 points more than I though), only 5 points behind 2nd place. The 20 points we lost being 2 minutes late did cost us 2nd place unfortunately.

Another one of our teams "Team Tortoise" did quite well also and got 4th place with 515 points. Congrats, great job. I guess their name was a little "misleading", perhaps to "throw off" the competition ;-)

I am not sure of the names of our other teams so perhaps you can let us know how you all did. Again, the results can be found at: http://losangelesorienteering.org/drupal/echo-park-urban-o/results

What a great day today orienteering. I think we all had fun. It was nice and cool in the morning which was great. It seems all of our teams did pretty well. Hope my tips at breakfast were helpful. I think my team "LAOutdoors" with Valentina and I did really well. Thanks Valentina for being a great teammate. We ran most of the time and we were exhausted at the finish. Arrived 2 minutes late but got 660 points which should be one of the better results. The results will be posted at http://losangelesorienteering.org/drupal/echo-park-urban-o/results
in a few days so you can see how you did compared to everyone else.

On a different note. Turns out breakfast at the Chango Coffee house was a bad idea. I had an omelette and got food poisoning. I was vomiting quite a bit yesterday but feeling better today. I really hope nobody else got sick. We are definitely going someplace else next time.

Great fun! I love exercise with a point. We had steep hills, hidden messages, beautiful architecture, lush landscapes, and extra friendly people. A wonderful way to spend a Sunday.

Sorry I missed this, I didn't see the okay in time. I did see people scrambling around Echo Park this morning, they looked like they were having a great time.

Looks like we have a big group for Sunday. I strongly recommend that you all read the information on the event at: http://losangelesorienteering.org/drupal/echo-park-urban-o

In particular pay attention to how the scoring works. This will make it less confusing for you when you get there. Also, I recommend reading the resources on the LA Orienteering web site although this is different from standard orienteering. I'll go over a bunch of things at breakfast but we do have a limited time so the more you know beforehand the better. The weather is looking great, warm and sunny.

It's going to be fun. Can't wait. See you all Sunday morning.
