Timber Moutain via Ice House Canyon trail is one of the best hikes in the San Gabriels Mountains. We will hike up the heart of scenic Icehouse Canyon into the Cucamonga Wilderness to Icehouse Saddle, then to the top of the 8303-foot Timber Mountain. This is a very popular trail, and we plan to visit it agin on the 3rd hike to 3T.

    Hi Everyone:

After my recent resignation from L.A. Hiking, I have decided to form a new group US Hiking. (http://www.meetup.com/USHiking/)

The main purpose of this group is to promote hiking as a tool for self empowerment. We have lots of fun events planned for 2014. Please take a moment to review our Event Portfolio. (https://docs.google.com/a/ushiki...)

If some of these events appeal to you, I want to invite you to join us.

Thanks Mike and everyone for making our first LAHG outing such a pleasure and for the photos! It was meant to be training for upcoming ski trip, but it turned into much more. And I'm here to document the excellent pitcher of draft Stone IPA apres-hike.

I was a glorious day to do this hike. Weather was perfect with blue sky and mild wind accompanying us all day. .

The spirit was high and people were friendly and fun-loving. Amusing incidents along the way made every strenuous step lighter to take. .

Let me take this moment to thank Karl for leading and Brad for sweeping. Without your assistance, this hike would not be possible. .

Thank you all for joining me. I hope it was as much fun for you as it was for me, and I look forward to seeing you all in my next adventure.

I am sure when we are in the shade, it would be a bit cold. You should bring a windbreaker to keep yourself warm.

    1 · January 23, 2014

  • Mike C.

Timber Mountain is the starting point for advanced hiking. I draw the line at 3,000' elevation gain. .

Some of you are new to this. Please read this page thoroughly so that you are clear as to what to bring, what to prepared for, and the potential hazards associated with it..

If you show up in a pair of sneakers and 2 bottles of water, you will regret your action fairly quickly.

Hi Mike. Would it be possible for me to join your hike this Saturday? I've done this trail three times in the past year last year. I consider myself somewhat proficient. Did Mt Wilson a few times last year (most recently in Dec) and Mt San Gorgonio (Sep 2013). Please add me to this meetup. Thanks!

Dammit something came up and I have to drop out of this one. I was really looking forward to it. Sorry to my carpool buddies and everyone else but hopefully this is enough notice for one of the many wait-listers to get in.

  • Mike C.

Brad, Could you sweep for me?

    January 16, 2014

      January 18, 2014

Okay, I'll get right on that. Searching for a backpacking weight version that has a big enough canister for all the dust on the trail.

I leapt to join this hike before I consulted my calendar. I have a prior commitment that I cannot re-schedule. Have fun, my friends

Not sure what to think here. Event posted 12:28am. I try to RSVP at 3:30am. Says event is full already. Only one person listed attending. Then says event is NOT full but to "sign-up" if interested. Will be notified?

    January 15, 2014

    • rick

Jay, I'm a pretty positive person, but I know when there is no chance. Read my earlier posts. The hike is filling and I've yet to receive an e-mail. How else do I get screened? I really like this meetup group so I'll continue to enjoy other outings with leaders Paul and Ranger Bob. Life and meetup.com is filled with too many options to wait.

      January 15, 2014

    • Mike C.

Rick, Paul and Bob are wonderful hike leaders. I am sure you will have a great time hiking with them.

      1 · January 15, 2014

  • Mike C.

L.A. Hiking Group has 24 hike leaders. All of them are excellent in what they do. Naturally, they all have their own niches. Some do beginner hikes. Some do intermediate hikers. I do mostly intermediate to advanced hikes. With this wide range, we hope to offer events with large enough spectrum to satisfy aspiration of most hikers.

Advanced hikes by its nature are longer in distance, steeper in elevation gain and more dangerous in trail condition. It could be very dangerous for someone who is not properly conditioned. Sever injuries and death do happen, not infrequently, along advanced trails.

To ensure hiker's safety, I review participant's recent hiking history to make sure the event is within his/her reach before a name is added to the list. I try to be as inclusive as possible, but always under the guiding principle of maintaining hiker's safety. Your understanding is appreciated.
