Venue Overview:

In 1864, Benjamin Wilson built the first modern trial in the range to haul down timber for his rancho. The trail climbed 7 miles to the summit which was later named after him. Midway up the trail in a shady glen along side the creek, Wilson built his "Halfway House" as a construction camp for the trail. Later, George Aiden and George Islip homesteaded the site and planted a small grove of fruit and nut trees.

Around 1890 James McNally turned Orchard Camp into a trail resort, and for 50 years it was one of the most popular hostelries in the range. Orchard Camp was abandoned in 1940 and soon after the trail became overgrown and eroded and by 1953 was posted as "Unsafe to travel." Thankfully, a group of Sierra Madre volunteers lead by Bill Wark worked hard to restore the trail which was reopened in 1960.

    Hi Everyone:

After my recent resignation from L.A. Hiking, I have decided to form a new group US Hiking. (http://www.meetup.com/USHiking/)

The main purpose of this group is to promote hiking as a tool for self empowerment. We have lots of fun events planned for 2014. Please take a moment to review our Event Portfolio. (https://docs.google.com/a/ushiking.org/document/d/1vkvLWIDhJQoWe53cagxaRudZNEc0oA2kzUm-UVbLYj8/edit)

If some of these events appeal to you, I want to invite you to join us.

Thank you all for joining me for this event. It is the largest advanced hike event for me. .

Weather was perfect. The cool breeze helped a great deal, and thanks to the other Paul's direction, we were able to find water at the top. .

When there is a large group, spirit was naturally high. We had a blast along the way. .

Let me take this opportunity to thank those who made this event possible. We need to thank Vince for leading the nature lover group and Mark for assisting. You guys were exceptional. Let me also thank Paul for assisting the fast hiker group and George for taking care of a fellow hiker throughout. Last but not least, let me thank Phil for expertly sweeping our tail end on the way down. .

I will take a break for 2 weeks and look forward to seeing you all after the break.

The hike was great and well organized by Mike and his assistants. This was not my first time up to Wilson but seems to be the most difficult approach!!As I tell my fellow hikers "Going up a hill defines ones character ,while going down a hill only messes up ones knees "!!

Hey, Robert! Did I meet you at the top? I was that Cambodian guy with a yellow T shirt. :) Your quote struck me, too! :thumbs up:

Hi Tim,I was the guy who got lost with Jane . We were ahead of the group by at least 20 minutes or so as we took a different route up to the top and did another additional mile ?Regardless, the quote is mine........Love you guys and cannot wait until the next big one !!!

Great day of hiking...splitting the large group into two worked out great and we still had a chance to all connect at the top

It’s an extraordinary hike. Thank you so much mike. I would like to say special thanks to George, Katie, Mike, Paul, Corinna, Mark, Vince, Phil and few more friends, without these people I couldn't complete this trail.

Yes mike, we did it to the top. Must say the last 2 to 3 miles to the summit were challenging & as we read the comments, it was a tough hike but enjoyable as well.

      February 22, 2014

  • Tim Z.

Thanks, Mike, Phil, Mark, and Vince for leading the hike! Had ass-kicking fun! My 1st time summitting Mt Wilson, and I can say I have found a conditioning trail for myself! It's only 40.8 miles from my home, closer than La Jolla Canyon. I'll be back many, many times. I also have to thank my fellow hikers. Great, fun company! Contrary to most of you, on my way down, also bagged Eaton Canyon trail along with Shenny! Lol!

Glad to have met Mike, Kimberly and had a chance to talk with several of you as I was headed down. Promise to formally join one of these events soon. I do have to say it was something special to summit during the sunrise - plus having the mountain to myself at pre-dawn hours was other-worldly. Maybe I can encourage somebody to lead a pre-dawn hike?

Hope somebody took a picture of the water faucet? : )

Yeah! I seen that when I posted one of my events. It made it tough for me to add or do things. I tried from both desktop and phone and still had problems. They should've left the desktop version alone!

Lynda is correct. Cosmic Cafe is closed so there is no food at the top. However, I do believe bathrooms are open for people visiting Observatory. In that case, there is water in the bathroom. Just in case, I am increasing water requirement to 3 liters.

The sign which says WATER can only be seen from the overflow parking lot. The sign is next to the giant pine, and the faucet is 8ft from the sign and clearly visible.

      February 22, 2014

    • Mike C.

Paul, You are most helpful. I will search between two parking lots for the giant pine tree and the bear proof trash cans for the faucet.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it. My knee swelled up after my run on Wednesday, and although I gave it a day to let up, it's still inflamed. I could probably do the hike but I don't want to slow down the group. Have fun and hope to join you all next time! Gandhi R and Annie, I'll be in touch via a PM.

    Mike,
I was curious to see if you will be wearing shorts or long pants as the weather looks as if it will be a high of 62 degrees. The only reason I'm asking is because I do not know the trail we are using and do not know if it will be a clear path or brush ? Let me know ? Thanks as always !
