In 1874 Tiburcio Vasquez, one of California’s most infamous outlaws, often used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. Since that time his name has been used in connection with this geological feature.
In 1935, Universal Pictures assigned Stanley Bergerman as executive producer on the film Werewolf of London. Bergerman suggested the Vasquez Rocks as the location for what was supposed to be Tibet. Since then, Vasquez Rocks have been used innumerable times in motion pictures various television series and in moving and still photography advertisements, and continue to be used in them today.
We’ll begin our adventure at the Interpretive Center where we can see some of the native inhabitants and history of the park. From there we will take the foot trails along ridgelines, into shallow canyons, and shaded hollows. There are many unique features to enjoy and explore. Some bouldering may be involved if desired. We will loop around to the prominent jagged rocks formation and return to the Interpretive Center.
Things that are good bring: Water, sunscreen, water, sunglasses, water, snacks, hiking shoes, hat, water, trekking poles, hiking stick, appropriate clothing, camera, at least 2 liters of water.
