Echo mountain is a popular, yet still strenuous hike from the Cobb Estate in Altadena to the ruins of the Mt. Lowe railway. This is a great hike to do at night, as its fire road (albeit a narrow fire road), and you will have both the city lights and natures lights guiding your way). I know the time might be a little early for some, but I wanted to start when there is still light.
The top has plenty of space to sprawl out and eat our food. The whole hike is officially 5 miles round trip, 2.5 miles each way. This is not what I would call a "first time ever hiking" hike. Its similarly strenuous as the hikes to Mt. Lee or Mt. Hollywood but a little longer.
The first time I went here was with Ranger. Please bring: a liter of water, FLASHLIGHT/HEADLAMP, basic first aid, charged phone, a layer for when the sun goes down, and food/dinner for on top (This is not a potluck per se, but feel free to share).
We will be taking off 10 minutes after 4, and should be back down around 7:15. (including staying up there for 1/2 hr-45 minutes to eat and socialize). There will be plenty of parking on Lake and Loma Alta roads.
