July 4th to Echo Mountain at Night

This is the 8th annual Fourth of July night hike to Echo Mountain for our Hiking club.

• Maintaining the Tradition....

• And the Santa Monica Hiking Club will join up with us.

We will meet at top of Lake Ave. at Cobb Estate at 6:15 PM - Altadena, CA

Park along the curb on either street or side street - WATCH OUT FOR PARKING SIGNS - I always park on side street to be safe.

This is the famed Mt. Lowe Railway Hotel location....3200 ft. elevation where Professor Thaddeus Lowe built the White City back in 1893.  It started a 40 year tourist attraction where people came from all over the world to take the "Railway To The Clouds"  (See pic below)

Bring food, snacks, and drinks of your choice.

AND Bring water

Distance: 5.2 miles round trip

Level: 5 / 10 Medium...not for beginners

Elevation: 3200 ft - elevation gain 1400 ft....continuous uphill trail.

No Dogs

The main objective is to watch the fireworks at the Rose Bowl (and other surrounding city fireworks) ....or is it to Party??

Hike up the Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mtn. When we reach the top (1.25 hours) we will sit around and watch the Rose Bowl fireworks which start at about 9 PM. If you have collapsible lawn chairs that can fit on your back pack, bring them b/c as you may know, there are no seats up there.  We will assemble at the hotel level up the steps...our traditional spot.  You can sit on the foundations or bring a chair....or sit on the ground.

We will be a distance from the Bowl, and the fireworks look a little tiny from atop Echo, but it is fun anyway. Especially when we are enjoying the refreshments we take with us.

There will be other groups up there....Sierra Club and Meet Ups.

This has become a very popular event.

For those who have never hiked to Echo Mtn. this trail is almost constantly uphill with little respite. You cannot get lost, so if anyone has trouble going up, you can always turn back.

It is a medium level hike, not a beginner hike.  You may bring flashlights for the trip back down.

We will head back down at about 9:45 - 10 PM , and be back to cars by 10:30 or 11 PM -- however, anyone who elects to leave early, that is an option.

This was one of the funnest hikes I've ever been to with some very nice people. The sunset was spectacular from the top as well as the fireworks. Next time I'll just have to buy flashlights that can stick to your forehead. Very long hike for me but I really enjoyed it in the company of so nature-loving Angelinos. Thank you for organizing this!

Ok here's the scoop Dan, I have a third hike with 60 RSVP's for the July 4th night too.
And the OC groups just decided to jump ship it seems to another meetup hiking org. So I am promoting and informing and showing pictures, posting info, directions.
      . ..
So many people turn out to be flakes last minute, that I kept my name on both county locations/3 hikes just in case one set of ''friends'' flakes on going, then I will go hike with the other people I know who are going either to Laguna or the 3rd hike nearby Laguna.. Glad I could simplify that for y'all. Please bring cheese. Btw, the Laguna gate 14 /cliff view is the one hike I can't picture. Why don't you post a picture here on the Echo mountain hike for all to see....

      July 4

    • Dan K

We are going to have great potluck:-)

      July 4

  • Bita Enayati A.

Thank you for organizing this hike. Is the trail made of sands like Runyon Canyon or more like rocks and dirt like in Temescal Canyon? In other words, is it going to be slippery and dangerous in terms of slipping? Or the only challenge is just going uphill the whole time?

    July 2

    • Shannon M

      Will bring my headlamp!!

      July 3

    • Kimanh

"serpentine lights weaving down the hill"...why, Lee...you're quite the romantic writer...lovely

    I heard 6:15 pm.

    1 · July 4

  • Shannon M

Hi can you pls confirm what time I'd need to be there to start up the hill with the group?

    July 4

    • Lee Z.

I have it stated at 6:15 PM. However I will be there by 6, and there will probably be a lot of people already there. Some like to head up right away before I make announcements. I usually wait until 6:30, after the bulk of the group heads up the hill, to make sure stragglers (late comers) can get directions or hike with me at the back end. This trail is single track, and the only trial going up - you cannot get lost, and many people already know the way, so they don't really need a leader.

      July 4

    • Shannon M

      Ok thanks!

    Hello to ALL,

  • Jaime

Hi Kimanh. Live in Sherman oaks n I'm up for carpooling...carpool lane should help with traffic and if not, at least we can chat and pass the time in traffic. I see you 5-5:30.

    July 4

    • Kimanh

Jaime...okay...I will meet you in parking lot at front of the whole foods. We'll have plenty of time. So..shall we say 5:15?

      July 4

  • Thomas

If it's cooler than 90 degrees at the time I'd be leaving, I'm there. Or, even better, can we somehow move Echo Mountain to the the beach?

We all parked on surface streets last year on July 4th nobody got tickets.

    July 4

  • camille m.

How is the parking situation since its a holiday????

    July 3

    • Faustino

You can get a ticket on N. Lake after 8 p.m. You can get a ticket on Alta Loma after 10 p.m. Park on one of the side streets further down and there should be no problem. Of course observe all the street signs as you ultimate guide.

Well as my trail guardian and mentor, please introduce me to one of your thousands of lady friends. We can have fireworks of our own. The 'safe and sane' ones of course

      July 3

    • Vlad

I agree with Lee Z. Went there many times - never had problem to "hardly get up" or see fireworks. I dunno - who is 'exalted LEE'?

      July 3

  • Faustino

I'll be heading up early to avoid the huge crowd. I'll also be weighed down with the imaginary piano bench for the imaginary piano that's being carried up. Using my imagination I've disguised the piano bench to look like wine bottles. Heading up at 5:30 p.m. in the blistering heat.

    1 · July 2

    • Lee Z.

Yes it will be warm....when we start up, it may be mid 80's, but down to high 60s at night. One year it was over 95 going up....now that was really hot.

      1 · July 2

    • Lee Z.

Remember, folks, we are hikers!!! Our bodies sweat, and the sensation of heat is greatly mitigated in favor of having a great time and getting good exercise.

Just hiked the ECHO MOUNTAIN FULL MOON HIKE last night. With LEE/ the other LEE hike leader.. we did a food and party hike. I can't imagine where we will fit 300 people on that ledge and the trail Is single file up and back. Unless you take the other approach up. Also parking is street only and lake street is a ticket after 8pm. If you have a flyer or any other details LEE Z. Please let me know when I see you this Friday at the full moon, G.P. hike.

Carey....I recommend everybody parks on the side streets and check for street signs. There is a lot of room up there....that picture I put shows only the lower tier. We always go up to the second level.
