Mt. Wilson via Chantry Flats

Distance: 14 miles roundtrip

Elevation gain: 4200'

Difficulty: 7 or 8/10

Total time: 7-8 hrs (including breaks)

Speed: 2 mph up & 3 mph down +/-

Let's hike up to Mt. Wilson and see the beautiful views of LA along with getting some great exercise as well... Do you think you're capable of following a map and reading the signs to find your way? Well, this is a good way to find out how well you can do. I will provide maps for the group.

We will first meet in the parking lot near the restrooms and then head down the Lower Winter Creek Trail to the Manzanita Trail up to Mt. Wilson. There we will eat lunch and if the Cosmic Cafe is open, you can buy lunch there (just be sure to bring about $10). There are restrooms up there. We can do some exploring if y'all wish. Then we will head back the same way except we will head down the Upper Winter Creek Trail. This route is around 80% shaded.

What to bring: 3-4 liters of water, snacks and lunch, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, any needed medication, hat, trekking poles (optional), hiking shoes, at least $10 if you're buying lunch, and you will need a National forest adventure pass to park. I will provide everyone with a map.

Directions: From the 210 head North on Santa Anita Ave. for 1.7 miles and it will turn into Chantry Flats Rd. continue for about another 3.2 miles until you reach the Chantry Flats parking lots.

If you are running late then you might not find parking since the parking lots fill up quick and you might have to park further down on the road, which might cause you to miss us. If you are familiar to the route than you might be able to catch up. I will not be able to check messages if anyone is running late and will be leaving at 6:40A.M. We will be meeting near the restrooms. You should see them on the right hand side as you come up to the parking lots.

Carpool: We will meet at REI in Arcadia at 6:00A.M. Leave by 6:05A.M. This will make it easier to get parking at Chantry flats. For those who do not wish to meet here and go straight up to Chantry, please see the above paragraph. (REI 214 N. Santa Anita Ave. Arcadia, CA 91006)

Ty so much! That's very kind of you... and I'm glad you all enjoyed yourselves. What made it more of fun experience was the rain we caught only on Mt. Wilson. I'm so proud of all of you for doing such a great job! We made great timing... 7hrs. You guys ROCK! BTW, that's including all the stops and breaks.

This is the number to call[masked] 1414. I called them already...Just follow up with them so they know that they are many people waiting to open the gate

    July 27

    • Shannon A.

Ok, I just called and they are sending someone to open the gate.

      July 27

  • Payal

Yes feels strange. Not sure what's our best option.

    July 27

  • Matt

Last night I checked the gate hours, it says open at 7 am on weekends , I was very skeptical, now seems...

    July 27

    • Shannon A.

Hmmm... they must've just changed the hrs.

      July 27

  • Shannon A.

A local resident just said that something happened up there last night around 10pm and he didn't know what, but an ambulance went up there. So if something major happened, that could be it.

    July 27

  • Cynthia

    The gate is still closed...

    July 27

    • Shannon A.

Ty, Cynthia! That's weird, cuz they usually open it by 6.

I'll be at the REI too. I don't mind driving a carpool but I don't have a parking pass. So, if anyone with a parking pass doesn't want to drive: let me know.

    July 26

  • Grace W.

I think OT would be wise if most people meet at REI and carpool up from there, due to such limited parking at Chantry Flats. I can list details for those interested.

There are a few people who did answer the question that I asked when rsvping for the hike and some of those few are new or seem to not have much hiking experience. Please be honest with yourself when signing up for ADVANCED hikes. You are responsible for yourself and will be advised to turn back if you can not handle the hike. This is a hike that one needs to build endurance for. People with a +1 are responsible for passing the info their guest and are taking responsibility for them. I ask this question for your own safety... plus so the rest of the group can enjoy themselves as well.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
