Joe, will we be rappelling down too? Always nice to have a danger element. Just recently did an 80' rappel down a cave near Tri-Peaks in Santa Monica Mtns.

I've got a 100' rope, not meant for climbing but would still do the trick

River crossings, climbing, and bushwacking? Sure.
I do have some webbing/'biners and some other gear to help get us unstuck, but no rope.

wow, i'm getting nervous about this one. should be exciting! are we taking the saddle from heaton to there? I'm also not too enthused about rappelling without gear. Lastly, any yucca blocking my path is getting cut! I've got to find some long ass hedge sheers.

don't worry john i'm not rappelling! still assuming we take heaton flat trail, but if we decide to ascend from allison gulch, still won't any technical stuff. also, i might change this to another date, we'll see

I would be ok with both approaches; from heaton Saddle or up the gulch. It seems that you can bypass the waterfalls in the gulch and avoid the technical stuff.

i would like to go up the gulch, make it more interesting. just have to figure out how high the water is. probably have to bring separate pair of shoes for first part

I definitely want to see your TR from this one, particularly if anyone's worked the old trail to the Stanley-Miller Mine. Have a good one. HJ

we should bring a few headlamps and helmets for any exploration inside the mines. i have a headlamp, will look into getting an appropriate helmet for this (bike helmet too bulky!)

I had a snow hike in Mount San Jacinto State Park, and climbed Cornell Peak today. It's awesome there! http://picasaweb.google.com/baulingfu/MountSanJacintoStat...#

yes the same place. would people prefer to meet at a carpool spot, or can everyone try to connect-up to carpool?

first 4 miles up the river then allison gulch are relatively flat (250 ft), then 900 ft gain in 1.5 miles (not bad), then 1000 ft gain in 1 mile which gets us by the mine. so that last party will be pretty steep, but not as long as Roundtop which was like 1600 ft....then there will be another 500 ft or so on the trail on the way back

I like John's idea of a sacrifice. I think that's what the prez was referring to in his speech yesterday.

okay so river level shouldn't be too bad, as long as we traverse the rocks okay we should get wet...unless we fall in!

0.25 inches so far today at Mt Wilson, 0.12 yesterday. the 'trails' we are going to take, who knows their conditions, they are probably in terrible shape to begin with! we'll only go as far as we can safely, and if that happens early, we'll just go hike another mt, but I doubt we'll have to

Yes, it was all good :-) having to look for the mine while ascending an incredibly gorgeous trail made the hike very, very nice.

Good variety of a hike. River crossings got cold after the 3rd time. From the gulch to the mine was a very steep climb. The mines themselves were great! Bigger than I had expected. It was just an all around great rainy day.

Great hike...I loved the mine exploration and river crossing part. All in all it was a great hike!
