Advanced Routes/Levels Backcountry Exploration

This location is shown only to members

Came across some new information which may dissuade you from voting for Ze's crazy hike. Check it out here: http://socalhikes.com...

Ok, so it's come down to these two routes. Personally, I was up for some exploring and staying off trail and off road as much as possible. Up in this area, there just seems to be a lot of roads. But Ze mapped out a good route which includes getting Hillyer, Pacifico, and Bare Mtn in. Mine is the same, except the way up to each is very very different [and better].

Here's the link to the map showing the planned course:

Ze's: http://www.mapmyhike....
- May require a car shuttle. But the distance between start and finish isn't too great.

John's: http://www.mapmyhike....

So, we're going to do this American Idol style. Please update your RSVP and put one of the following:
(A) for "Ze's [fail] plan"
(B) for "John's [awesome] plan"
(C) for "don't care [for ze's plan]"
(D) for "I'm just too excited and will defer my vote to the person at the bottom of the YES RSVP list"
(E) for "this post is already too long and these options aren't helping one bit so stop wasting my time with all of this voting nonsense"

Voting closes Thursday! I'll also need to coordinate with those with a GPS device so that you can put these tracks on your device. Otherwise, we're looking to our WTC grads for navigation.

For those on the WAITLIST, you have not been added to YES because I don't not know your hiking levels. This is an Advanced Levels hike. So please email me stating your hiking level/experience, physical fitness, and/or any exercise that you do outside of hiking.

For all trips, wear boots or sturdy shoes, and bring lunch, lots of drinks, warm clothing (depending on altitude)

The trip "leader" is a volunteer and not a real leader (i.e. not liable for the group). Think of it as hiking with a group of friends.

Joining LA Hiking hikes is entirely voluntary and participants assume the full risks associated with the activities. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate in a strenuous hike, with the appropriate water, food, clothing, first aid, and navigation equipment for the conditions. The LA Hiking Group and the individual organizers make no warranties about the safety or supervision of these activities.

@Audrey: Sorry Audrey, you're a yes for both days. So consider your other plans cancelled. @Jen: wait list until you get back from your trip. Got to make sure you have all your toes.

@jen: Good. Although I was kind of looking forward to seeing a toe floating in a jar of formaldehyde.

@rita: I'm going to route things out tonight. Ze found a route that includes Baker, Hillyer, and Pacifico. According to him, this would be a 16 mile jaunt but we wouldn't need a car shuttle. Sorry for the delay, will have something tomorrow. These days are just flying by now.

alright, i like the 2nd option. however...i have my own crazy concoction which you can see here http://www.mapmyhike.com/route/us/CA/Los%20Angeles/468123... this would be on call depending on snow/ice since we'll be for the most part finding our own routes and going through brush. Mileage is about 17 with about 3500' gain total. So it's not too bad...

Actually, i meant the first option (14 miler). And I totally lost track of time and the people on the news are rather chipper. As for the actual hike, we'll leave it up to a democratic vote i guess. that is if ze can make it. otherwise, back to the evil dictatorship that you have all subliminally accepted. muwahahah

I personally like Joe's version of Roundtop, Pacifico and Hillyer. It has a nice ridge hike to Roundtop and avoids a several mile-long stroll back to the cars after the last peak.

ze's hike will have less brush!

Ok, here's a brief rundown on how I see things: Most of the hike I am trying to stick to firebreaks and ridges. Questionable areas are (1) after Hillyer heading down into the creek and up towards Pacifico until we hit the firebreak (about miles 2.75-4.5). (2) After Pacifico things get really interesting. We're just following the ridge as mapped until we get to the ridge that goes to Bare(miles 5.75-9.10). Once at this ridge, there's a trail that we can take back.

Either way though, we're going to get to the same peaks, it's just a question of whether you want to have battle scars on monday?

maybe. too close to tell. plus, we're still waiting on the absentee ballots; and according to the surveys taken, they're overwhelmingly in favor of B.

that's about 15 miles @3500', i'm thinking we'd be at the cars by latest 4. That's if we don't lose our way and go wandering or exploring even more. Also, was thinking about eating up there if we ended early. Otherwise, an idea came about to get some appetizers down in the city and then getting kogi!!! That would be if we finished late though. What do you guys and gals think?

I will bring a gps, as long as we have the waypoints we shouldn't get too lost.

Had a great time. If not for time constraints it would have been perfect. Kudos goes to those guys up front who kept fiddling with the GPS and maps, so all we had to was hike.
Another beautiful day. And while we didnt get Bare, we did get Beer Mtn! ;) Pics are going up..

18 miles was about 1 more than i really expected. But I also expected to bag Bare, oh well, next time. Good route though. Just a lot more brush than expected. btw, my route would have failed nicely after Pacifico. So it's a good thing Ze routed one out also. And thanks to our pathfinders as well.
