10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF PRESERVATION OF THE CAVE OF THE MUNITS...FROM With protected open space ringing almost the entirety of the 27th District, it's always exciting to celebrate milestones. On Sunday, November 17, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the acquisition of the land that is now the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve in Calabasas, but which many of us stubbornly still call the Ahmanson Ranch. These magnificent 2,983 acres of rolling hills and oak savannahs are located virtually in the geographic heart of the 27th Senate District. While the property was long coveted by the community for permanent protection, it was bought by Washington Mutual for development in the 1990s. Plans included massive grading and removal of countless oak trees, leveling much of the land and the construction of 3,000 new homes, two PGA golf courses, and 400,000 square feet of commercial development. All of this would have added an estimated 45,000 additional cars per day to the already congested 101 freeway, and a major road from Victory Boulevard in the Valley to Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Agoura Hills. The community mobilized a grassroots effort to fight the development. They succeeded! This led to the largest-ever parkland purchase in the Los Angeles/Ventura County region. The purchase and preservation success can also be credited to two rare and endangered species found on the site: the San Fernando Valley Spineflower and the Red-Legged Frog. These species are unique to the area and were in danger of destruction if their habitat were developed.
