Crest Trail Hike End to End from the South

Physical Rating: Strenuous
Technical Rating: Advanced
Distance: 28.5 miles
Elevation Gain: ~5700 feet
Approximate Duration: 13 hours
Starting time: 6am sharp
Prerequisites: Must have hiked up either the south crest trail to the tram (approximately 15 miles) or the north crest trail to the gift shop (approximately 10 miles) previously. You will need to bring at least 64 oz (e.g., 2 liters, a half gallon) of water, a snack and emergency money (in case you need to take the tram down).

How to find us: Meet at the Canyon Estates trailhead a little before 6am.

Hikers will start at Canyon Estates (Tijeras) at 6:00am, take one late morning snack at the bear shelter, get to the tram around 1pm, and finish at Tunnel Springs at about 7pm.  If enough runners express interest, I may set up a second group for runners.

I'll arrange a car to pick up six or so people and take them back to their cars at Canyon Estates. If more than six join us, we'll have to figure out how to get another person to pick up the others.

We will be stopping for a half hour to forty five minutes at High Finance, so you'll also either need to bring food to eat while we stop or some money to buy food (and perhaps drink).

We do not take CCC or Ojo del Orno; we follow the Crest Trail 100%.

This is--for most people--an exceedingly difficult hike. It about 28 miles long, with about 5,700 feet of elevation gain and 5,800 feet of elevation loss. It's possible to bail when you get to the top of the tram, but even that takes about seven hours of uphill hiking to get to.

If you are unsure of your ability to complete this hike, please email me so that we can discuss your previous hiking history and figure out whether you'd enjoy yourself on this hike.

Dogs are not allowed.

For anyone interested, here's what my Garmin recorded for the hike:

It claimed 27.17 miles, 5,477 ft. of gain. We did the whole thing, including a forty-five minute lunch break in eleven and a half hours.

Susan, there's no age limit. Some events are more strenuous than others. This one was pretty tough.

Looking at all your events, I'm wondering if I'm not too old to be a member. Is there an age limit?

I don't see Chris. We're headed out now. Text me if you start hiking, Chris.

I had a really good run last night, then came home to clean and stepped on a cactus needle while taking the trash out. This bastard wouldn't come out, broke off at the surface. Did some digging and just made a mess. Was thinking it would be okay but working on it all day made me realize that I don't want to be the guy who slows down the group or falls way back. I could do it but I'm also worried I'll injure myself with an awkward gait, my steps are somewhat off. I have some important Half-Marathon events in a few weeks that I do not want to compromise. I am very disappointed that I cannot join you all, please accept my apology for the late drop out, I really thought it would be okay today.
Have fun everyone, I'll be watching the Sandia's tomorrow. All lonely and sad.

we are planning to drop one of our cars about 5am. We'll have 3 on the return with room for 1 more comfy - 2 more if uncomfy

I added Karon as my +1. We have ten now. That's the lawful limit for a single group. I'm going to use email to coordinate cars so that we can get all get back to Canyon Estates after the hike.

If there are others who want to go, please put yourself on the wait list and send me email. Sometimes we get no shows, or if there is enough interest we might be able to split into a fast group and a slow group. I really don't want to leave anyone out, but I also don't want to violate the Forest Service group size restriction.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
