Ball Ranch, ex 7

I've been to Ball Ranch six times since 2006 and never hiked the same route twice. This time I'd like to explore the west side of Espinaso Ridge.

Best guess is a 5-mile loop. It's not a speed hike, far from it, in fact may require long breaks for photo ops. However, be aware it may also require scrambling in and out of deep trenches (and maybe some quicksand, which as you probably know is terribly slow).

The goal is to be on top of the ridge in time for sunset. From there it's an easy downhill mile to the parking area by the windmill.

Access to Ball Ranch requires a key, so we'll carpool from Walgreens just east of I-25. The trailhead is about an hour drive from there. BLM couldn't provide an update on road conditions beyond the gate, so let's assume the worst. Please indicate if you intend to drive or ride. For reference, my Outback will probably scrape twice, but I'm ok with that. No need for 4WD unless it rains. (Not likely.)

More details about the area are in 60 Hikes ABQ: http://www.restlesstribes.com/26

The colors were vibrant and the weather was beautiful. Thanks Stephen and the rest of the group for a wonderful hike.

For those that seemed interested. 4.99 miles, 493 feet of elevation gain/loss according to my GPS tracks. http://alltrails.com/tracks/bal...

I'll try and get pictures up later this week.

Excellent Meetup. Well led (thanks Stephen), great place, good people, beautiful day. Couldn't have been better.

I'd love to allow more, but the hike crosses a designated Area of Critical Environmental Concern . Some sites along the way are particularly sensitive. Those on the waiting list will be admitted in the usual meetup order.

Sound like parts of this road will be a little bouncy. I drove side roads off Quebradas today that would have been tough for Explorers etc, but were OK with RAV4 (short wheel base version, 4wd, not luxurious on bad roads but very capable).

I'd be happy to take 2 humans, or one human with well-behaved dawg. I don't want anybody named Gretchen to sit on my lap.

Alternatively I'd be happy to ride with somebody else. Let's not waste machinery and gasoline.

I'm looking forward to hiking with Stephen!

I am new to this and was wondering why is there a limit to the # of people if there are enough cars to drive more?

    September 7, 2013

  • Stephen

Seems we could get everyone there in two vehicles, though that would limit the number of dogs. How many would like to bring theirs? Also, drivers please let us know if you're ok with dogs in your vehicle.

I'm fine with dogs on my vehicle as long as they are on a leash. If Vidya rides with me, she gets the front seat as she gets car sick. My dog, Gretchen, is a Weimeriner and she sits right behind me. She does think she is a lap dog. Other dogs could go in the back of my Expedition.

Which means I have room for three people including Vidya. I can take a fourth if someone doesn't mind having Gretchen on their lap.

I have a four wheel drive and I'll be glad to drive so people can ride with me if they like.

You need to keep watching. At this point, it looks like you are#2 on the wait list.

Would prefer to ride with someone if more cars go.

FYI: Ball Ranch is south of Budaghers (but accessed from exit 259)
Most (if not all) of the hike will be in section 4:

Hey that's wonderful... did a two-man exploratory early this year... wanted to go back but haven't had the opportunity... Toyota RAV4, would drive or ride... Definitely into photo ops and dawdling

Riders: Please offer drivers $5 for gas; $10 if the vehicle incurs obvious damage, such as a flat tire.

I would prefer to ride with someone. My car has very low clearance

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
