2 Peaks: Mount Taylor & La Mosca Plus Explore Water Canyon Trail in 1 Day

  • October 19, 2013 · 6:30 AM

Time: 6:30am (please be prompt because we will leave by 6:35am)

Who Should Attend: Only active hikers who are capable of hiking 12+ miles at a decent pace should plan on attending. Elevation Gain: Approx. 3,000ft. Note: Attendance is limited to seven hikers because of the length, difficulty and daylight constraints.  If you are interested in this hike, please sign up on the waiting list for a potential spot.

Hike Description: This is a SEMI-EXPLORATORY hike. Semi-Exploratory means that I have been on part of the trail, but not the entire route that we are going to explore. Note: If you have a low tolerance for making a wrong turn and exploring, then you may not want to attend this hike. As far as difficulty, this is a challenging hike with approximately 3,000ft of elevation gain and loss.

This hike will be physically challenging because of the numerous elevation gains and losses.

We will first hike up to Mount Taylor (11,301ft) which is about 3 miles one way.  After that, we will hike down and up to La Mosca Peak (11,041ft) about a mile away and then from there down to the Water Canyon TH.  I have not been on the Water Canyon trail, so this is the exploratory component of the hike.  The trail is about 2.5 miles down and then we will turn around and hike back up and over Mount Taylor Peak then to our vehicles.

After the hike, there is an option to stop at the Wow Diner, where there is something for everyone on the menu.

Unplugged Hike: Cell phones must be turned off during the hike.

Vehicle Requirement: We will be traveling about five or six miles on a dirt road.  Passenger vehicles may have have a problem.

Recommended Items: Water, Snack/Lunch, and Appropriate Gear

Dogs: Not allowed this time.

Weather Notice: If inclement weather looks imminent, please check this site 30 minutes prior to start time.

A great day for hiking with a great group of people. I wouldn't have hiked all that way with you!

Thank you for an enjoyable hike! Did someone leave a water bottle in my car?

Fantastic hike - strenuous times 2. Up to the Mt Taylor peak, down and up to the La Mosca peak, and then nearly 3 miles down Water Canyon Trail which left us lower than our initial starting point. From there a steep climb back to the top of Mt Taylor and back to car. All told, somewhere between 14.5 and 15.5.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
