Phyical Level: Strenuous
Tecnical Level: Advanced
Rating: Class 3+ and 4 scramble
Time: 6+ hours car to car
Note: Given the advanced level of this scramble I will only approve 3 people.  Get on the waiting list if you want to go.
Meetup Place: Piedra Lisa Trail Head Parking Lot

Looking across the "W" towards the headwall.
The headwall is about 200 ft. in height.

HIKE IN A NUTSHELL:

Assemble Piedra Lisa Trail Head Parking Lot

Slow steady pace up the Piedra LIsa Trail to the intersection with the Rincon Spur

Take the Spur east to the base of the Knife Edge

Scramble to dead tree ledge tree, climb up a short 12ft segment (5th class moves), cross a slab and onto the Knife Edge proper.

Scramble up to the edge of the Knife Edge and have lunch.

Scramble back to the base and hike back to the Piedra Lisa Parking lot.

CAUTION: Going up the Knife Edge is not without risk. The potential for injury exists. The segment we will be scrambling on potentially dangerous.  There is serious exposure along the the way.   I've done the route to top of the Shield many times as well as come down the Knife Edge from the Crest.  If you stay focused you will stay safe.

We extend the hike by returning along Rincon Ridge. Brian introduced me to some awesome scrambling on some of the high points along the way. We bailed off the ridge just shy where the ridge lies along a north-south line. The land below the ridge system is beautiful terrain. We worked our way cross country until we intersected with the Piedra Lisa trail close to the Junction with the movie trail. Fabulous day for hiking. Brian is good company.
