La Luz to 5 Mile Marker and back with possibility of more.

Well the tram is closed so we need to alter our strategy.  If you want to car pool in meet at the Outpost Ice Arena before 9:45am.  We'll depart there promptly at that time and drive to the La Luz trail head.  If you want to go direct to the trail head meet us there at 10 am.

I'm a veteran and there is a ton of free food available for vets on Monday.  So this will be a calorie burning hike.

We can decide the extent of our hike when we meet on Sunday.  As a minimum we will hike to the 5 mile marker and back down.

It will be fast paced (3-3.5 mph) until we reach the 5 mile marker of the La Luz trail just before the switch backs start.  If we go beyond that the scree on the switchbacks will cause us to slow down a bit.  We'll stop somewhere with a nice view and have some lunch.

The hike will total about 10+ miles on a moderately steep trail.  Please do not sign up if you are not in shape to handle the distance, trail incline and pace.

I believe the entire route is within the 25 person group limit but do not want to have a group that big.  I might increase the limit a bit if necessary.

If you want to have more than one guest please contact me directly.

Thanks Chris and Keith. The mistake I made was not knowing the area and relying on the map above. If you click "outpost Ice Arena" it will bring you to a map. Move the map to the Sandia Tramway and you will see La Luz trail starting from the Sandiago Mexican Grill (that is at the Sandia Tramway). It was excellent weather.

Keith and I left the trailhead at 1005, no one was there. But still had a great hike

We left at 10:01. I looked at my watch which is atomic and never off. Sorry we missed you. We did not see anyone but a couple (man and woman) in the area when we left. During the 5+ minutes that we were waiting at the trail head we only saw a couple of people on bicycles. The important thing is it was a beautiful day for hiking and we all got out there to enjoy it.

Sorry, everyone! Thanks, Robin for the correction. As a group I am certain it would have been fun. Nevertheless, I still had a good hike and I met many friendly hikers. Next time I will leave earlier to meet at the arena.

Keith, I am also a Vet and you can share the info on the free food. I understand park fees are free for Vets this weekend. I will meet you all at the La Luz start (hope I don't get lost--I'll be in a black camaro) at 10 AM as I will not make it to Arena by 945. ( Xochiti, since I am the old guy of the group, you will probably outpace me).

I'd like to hike with you all- I am tempted to go a little earlier to leave myself more time to go out on the town in the afternoon. Plus I may be a little slower that 3.5/hour if the trail is steep. I'll sleep on it- any opinions from you all? I don't mind being left behind, but I want to get to the right trail head, and maybe get some orientation from those of you that have been out there before. Either way, I imagine I'll come across some of you at some point on the trail.

For those who are interested in joining me, I'll be hiking with the group to the turn-around point, and then onward to the top and back down again. We should be back at the trailhead by 5:00, but bring a headlamp just in case!
