Super Bowl Workout - Chimney/La Cueva Canyon Loop - Difficult

  • Feb 2, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • La Luz Trail Parking Lot

Hike up Chimney Canyon to Sandia Crest and head down La Cueva Canyon to the parking lot, avoiding the La Luz Trail whenever possible. Hopefully, we'll get back between 2-3 p.m. so you can watch Denver win the Super Bowl.

Challenges: Off-trail hiking, steep inclines and declines, and hiking on snow and ice.

Dangers: Hiking and scrambling has inherent dangers that could result in serious injuries or even death. Dangers on this hike include rockfall, ice, slipping, and falling.

Hiking requirements: Fit hikers who are confident on snow, ice and steep surfaces and are capable of hiking at a moderate pace with only a few stops.

Equipment needed: Winter clothes and a traction aide (no Yak-Trax) are mandatory. Waterproof hiking shoes with good tread, gaiters, and poles with snow baskets are highly recommended.

Stats: Hike is in the 7-8 mile range with close to 4,000 feet of elevation gain.

I love it when the way is prelude. Had a great time remembering a former Super Bowl climb up the ridge of the Thumb, and a few climbs in Chimney Canyon including the Tyrolean Traverse of the Cake and the Candle and a certain little wall I led years ago and I can't remember the name but it is not too far down the main canyon and has a thin crack at the top. Nathan, search The Pulpit for the great little cave route.

I have a pass too and can meet anyone who wants to avoid paying the $3.00 parking fee outside the National Forest Wilderness gate just off of Tramway on FR 333. I'll park at the kiosk between 7:40-45 if you want to ride with me.

Last Minute Disclaimer: I can't guarantee we will be back at the parking lot by 2 p.m. as that will depend on the speed of the group. I can do the loop easily in 5 hours but don't know the fitness and/or the hiking abilities of each member who signed up.
