La Luz Trail Parking Lot
Hike up Chimney Canyon to Sandia Crest and head down La Cueva Canyon to the parking lot, avoiding the La Luz Trail whenever possible. Hopefully, we'll get back between 2-3 p.m. so you can watch Denver win the Super Bowl.
Challenges: Off-trail hiking, steep inclines and declines, and hiking on snow and ice.
Dangers: Hiking and scrambling has inherent dangers that could result in serious injuries or even death. Dangers on this hike include rockfall, ice, slipping, and falling.
Hiking requirements: Fit hikers who are confident on snow, ice and steep surfaces and are capable of hiking at a moderate pace with only a few stops.
Equipment needed: Winter clothes and a traction aide (no Yak-Trax) are mandatory. Waterproof hiking shoes with good tread, gaiters, and poles with snow baskets are highly recommended.
Stats: Hike is in the 7-8 mile range with close to 4,000 feet of elevation gain.
