Otero Canyon Loop - Somewhat exploratory

This will be a hike of roughly 8 miles give or take a couple with two substantial uphill climbs.  We'll start at the Otero Canyon trail head, heading up the canyon but taking the first branch to the right(west) up onto the ridge on the west side of the canyon.  We'll make a turn to the south following the ridge line until we near the AFB boundary.  At that point we'll descend back down into the canyon and take a trail that heads up to the ridge on the east side of the canyon.  When we get up on that ridge we may vary from the route that I have taken a few times before as we work our way back to the parking lot.

    Keith,
I discovered that there is a limint to the size of the photo that the page will accept. And 16 megabytes is bigger than that limit.

    Keith,
I am unable to add any of my pictures to this activity. Do you need to enable something for that to happen?

Hi, I am new to meetup & Albuquerque. I'd love to join, however, I do not have poles/gear. I've been on hikes up to 6 miles. I do not want to slow the group. Is this for me?

You'll have to make that decision based on the info provided. I would suggest you try something else for your introduction to the group. If you do come and you're struggling for any reason, you will be responsible for turning around and getting yourself back to the parking lot.

I got the correct info out of my gps. The loop will be 6.9 miles with 1800 feet of total ascent.

Ok. I will probably send out a more detailed email late tomorrow but be advised that I hiked there today and was surprised to find a fair amount of ice, snow and mud. I don't require anything as we're all adults and everyone is responsible for their own safety but I would recommend either ice traction devices for your boots or hiking poles. I did hike the entire loop with neither but it would have been easier with 1 or 2 hiking poles. The traction devices I would keep in the pack and only use them if very uncomfortable with the trail condition. At least 2/3 of the trail is dry. We will skip anything exploratory and stick to the same loop I did today only in the reverse direction. I tracked it but my gps is giving me weird info. I think it was between 7 and 8 miles with several hundred feet of climb.

Back at Smith's at 4 pm should be easy enough.

Keith--not sure I can do more than 8 miles, but I have hiked the area before and can find my way back to the parking lot if necessary. I'm also not fast--so your call if you want to take me off.
