Santa Fe Baldy Hike and Snowshoe - Difficult

  • This location is shown only to members

Let's hike/snowshoe up Santa Fe Baldy via the Winsor Trail. Please know your limits and what you are capable of if you wish to join me, as this is a difficult and taxing hike in the winter. A poor weather forecast will cancel this outing; check the MeetUp site on Saturday evening for changes or a cancellation.

Challenges: Difficult, high altitude (12,600+ feet) winter hiking with snow and ice. Possibly breaking trail if it snows a day or two before the hike.

Dangers: Winter hiking and mountaineering have inherent dangers that could result in serious injuries or even death. Dangers on this hike include slipping or falling, frostbite, and hypothermia from inadequate winter clothing. Hike leader or MeetUp Group is not responsible for any accidents or injuries incurred.

Hiking requirements: Fit hikers who are confident on snow, ice, and steep slopes and capable of hiking at a moderate pace with only a few stops.

Equipment needed: Winter clothes (no cotton) that will keep you warm in zero degree temperatures, dark sunglasses, face protection in case it gets windy, water proof boots, snowshoes, gaiters, a traction aide (no Yak-Trax), and a headlamp with spare batteries are mandatory. Make sure you have plenty of food to fuel your body and a method to keep your water from freezing. Poles with snow baskets are highly recommended.

Stats: Hike is in the 15-17 mile range with close to 3,700 feet of elevation gain.

Despite the gale force winds and the snow shoes in the car, it was a great day on the trail. Thanks Doug.

I really enjoyed this hike despite the gale-force winds along the summit ridge and the difficult accent and decent from Puerto Nambe to the ridge and back in loose, two foot deep snow. We brought our snowshoes but decided they wouldn’t be needed; it was a bad choice. We still made good time and I was very happy to have such good company to share the pain with.
