Red Canyon/Crest/Spruce Spring Loop Hike (Manzanos)

  • May 4, 2014 · 9:00 AM

This is a loop hike using three of the trails in the Manzano Mountains.  The two trails follow stream beds, canyons, while the crest trail follows the ridge line of the mountains.  Woods, streams, views.

About 7 miles and 2,000 feet of elevation gain.

As in the Manzano Peak hike that I posted for the day before this one, I am not setting up a car pool from ABQ because I will be camping at the state park.  The group can meet at the Smith's at Tramway and Central at 7:30 am and car pool.

Feel free to join me for both hikes and camping down there.  There is also a USFS campground at Red Canyon.

Very nice hike, thank you for putting this together Keith. Only regret was not having anyone join me to carpool from Alb.

I'll plan to meet at Smiths' at Tramway & Central at 7:30 am to carpool. Will there be someone there that knows the way? No problem if not as Keith's directions are quite good.

Hi This hike sounds great. Are dogs allowed?

Yes if they don't bother other hikers.

She (my dog) won't bother other hikers… My daughter will be with me the month of May and we are thinking that a nice hike and overnight stay will be a great way to start our time together. Looking forward to meeting everyone soon!

You can go to google maps and type in Red Canyon Campground to get directions or follow these. Exit off I40 at Tijeras and head south on Rt 337. Follow it until it dead ends. Turn right onto Rt 55. Follow this to the town of Manzano. Drive through town and as you are leaving it to the south, this road will be curving left but another road (rt 131 aka B062) will be forking off and heading straight away from you. There should be a sign there for Manzano State Park and/or Red Canyon Campground. Take this road. Follow it to a sign marking the entrance to the state park and turn right onto Forest Service Road 253. Follow it to the end. The trail parking area is on the right just before entering the Red Canyon Campground.

I would love to join this hike if I could get an address to GPS as I am new in the area.
