Full Moon Snowshoe Hike at Ellis Trailhead to Tram

  • February 23, 2013 · 6:15 PM

Physical Level: Moderate
Technical Level: Beginner - Moderate
Distance: approximately 1.8 miles
Terrain: Trail, open space
Time: 2 hours estimate + travel time to and from Smiths
Note: If you don't have snowshoes and would like to go you can rent them at REI. We can expect sub freezing temperatures.

The Hike in a Nutshell:

  • Carpool to the Ellis Trailhead from Smiths on Tramway
  • The trail we are taking is relatively flat and is .9 miles each way.  Beginners can stick with me and anyone faster WHO IS FAMILIAR WITH THIS TRAIL can go ahead to Tram area and enjoy the views until we get there.  We'll see how busy the restaurant is.  If it's not too bad maybe we will go in for hot chocolate.
  • Return to parking lot using trail
  • Option to stop for something to eat on the way back

I am asking everyone in my group to bring a headlamp and/or flashlight just in case.

This is a winter hike so all precautions should be taken to prevent cold injury.  Here are a few websites that may be of interest:

I sent an email to everyone going. I have come down with a stomach bug and won't make it. Bill however has graciously agreed to lead it. He knows the trail, so you'll be in good hands. Earlene and Maureen will also be there with another meetup group so they'll be able to help out too. I'm bummed i can't go. Have a great time.

Hey everyone. It looks like we will have nice snow. If you are listed as going and can't make it please change your RSVP now. That way someone on waiting list can take your spot. Thanks

    February 21, 2013

  • Bill

I'll be at a search and rescue training during the day in Santa Fe. I'll let someone have my spot.

Can someone lead a 2nd group?

    January 17, 2013

    • Sheila

This trail is very easy to follow. you would have to work to get lost. it's also flat and appropriate for beginners. You may want to put that on your description. Any hard core snow shoe hikers may get bored on this trail.
