Announcing a new Meetup for The Albuquerque Hiking and Outdoor Meetup!

What: We are at it again -- 1/4 Pipe Recon
When: Saturday, December 29,[masked]:15 AM

Where: Smith's
200 Tramway Boulevard Southeast
Albuquerque, NM 87123

Physical Level: Moderate to Strenuous
Technical Level: Moderate
Distance: approximately 8-10 miles
Terrain: Combination of trail and off trail
Time: 6-8 hours estimate
Note: Traction device such as micro-spikes, gaiters, and full complement of layers are advised.  This is not a beginners hike and off trail hikes are potentially dangerous.

Mikee, Victoria and I have have developed many off trail routes in the Sandia Mountains such as "The Canyon with no Name", "The Scar", and "The Gates of Hell". We develop some routes by doing reconnaissance hikes looking for such things as escape routes, exit points and lay of the land issues. That is the case here. The new hike will eventually be called the Quarter Pipe.  Right now we are laying the ground work.

Our objective is to explore an area above the cliffs laying west of the North Crest Trail about a mile past the Del Auga Overlook. What we will be looking for is weaknesses that can be exploited as exit routes. We will leave the North Crest Trail on the south side of the canyon that comes up from the "Gates of Hell". The terrain after this point is unknown. Based on visual observations there will be some bushwhacking involved.

This is the hike in a nutshell:

  • Carpool to Sandia Crest from Smiths @ Tramway and the I40
  • Hike from Crest House to the east end of the canyon running up from "The Gates of Hell".
  • Hike along the of the north side edge of the canyon making observations for potential off trail hikes.
  • We will head north when we cliff out near the "Gates of Hell". This is our target area.
  • We will stop for photo ops. I want to have hires images of the area for study.
  • When the recon is complete we will return to the cars. We can stop to eat if the group wants
  • I expect to do the complete hike late spring 2013.
  • We will set a turn around time.
  • Turn around triggers such as weather conditions will be in place.

This is a winter hike so come prepared.  As noted above gaiters, full complement of layers, micro-spikes are recommended.

The pace out will be moderate given I am still rehabbing. We can divide into fast and slow groups once back on the N. Crest Trail if people are in a hurry.

Check it out!
