Hike @ Turkey Run

  • November 23, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • Turkey Run State Park

If you've hiked at Turkey Run before, you'll know it's one of the best hiking spots in the state, and if you haven't hiked there and are ready for something rugged, here's your chance to check it out.

For this hike, we'll be doing about 4 or 4.5 hours and covering between 7 and 8 miles today. The trails we'll be doing go through some rocky gorges and streambeds, and we'll also see a few inclines and some steep staircases. Please be sure to bring plenty to drink and a snack or two.

Admission to the park is $5 per vehicle. We'll be meeting in the parking lot in front of the Nature Center at 1pm. Just look for the crowd of us. Also, restrooms are located inside the Nature Center. A link to a map of the park is located here at the Indiana DNR website.

Car Pool Info: NEW LOCATION! To avoid the Farmer's Market crowd, our car pool will be meeting a new location for this hike, so please be aware that we will not be meeting alongside Broad Ripple High School. Instead, we'll meet along the west side of Bishop Chatard High School, which is on the corner of Kessler Boulevard and Crittenden Avenue, at 5885 Crittenden Avenue. The parking along the street is free on Saturdays. We'll meet on the sidewalk in front of the school and leave at 11am. Please be on time.
Please Note:

Car pool @ 11am

Hike @ 1pm

Length: 7 to 8 miles, around 4 or 4.5 hours

Hike category: Rugged!

See you at the hike,

Michael

Thanks John. No, i chose not to use the Suggest option. I figured if there is no easy means to post impromptu outings/requests for willing hikers to hit the trails, they already have their reasons.

Thanks for posting this. I have to work today (been working crazy, ridiculous hours since mid October), but should be winding down in the next month or so. Anyway, I hope to get in a winter hike (with snow!) and a few early spring hikes. Have fun today.

The forums are locked down, no means to suggest anything directly to the site. So....this is where I'll state I'm looking to hit Turkey Run this Sunday morning 2/2/14. It will likely be a bit messy due to the precip tomorrow, but sometimes you just have to get out, and getting dirty comes with the territory! I wonder if anyone else has any interest.

Parking lot in front of the Nature Center at 1pm. The Nature Center is as far to the right as you can go in the large parking lot after entering the park. It's past the pool and in the direction of the suspension bridge.

I will be going directly to the park, but might be a bit late. Which trail are people going on first? Along the river going left after the suspension bridge towards trail 9?

Yes....I'll text you if it changes.

Sorry, when I first signed up I was thinking this was the weekend of Thanksgiving and that I would be free. Unfortunately, I'm working crazy 65-70 hours a week a work, including tomorrow. Have a great time.
I look forward to the winter hikes. Here's to lots of snow this winter.

Help the newbie...I haven't hiked in a very long time but have done a few runs lately. Hiking boots or tennis shoes? Two pair of socks? Light weight jacket or ski jacket...jeans? Any advice is appreciated...

    November 11, 2013

    • Jackie B.

Hiking boots for sure if you have them. I don't like wearing two pairs of socks personally--good durable socks (especially wool) should be fine with one pair. Two pairs can cut off your circulation and make you colder, actually. And dress in layers! Bottom layer should be warm and moisture-wicking (like a thermal shirt), top layer should shed wind and water. Then you put however many insulating layers in between that you need at the moment. It's good to have stuff to take off and put on as you get warm and cold depending on how the hike goes. Jeans are fine, if it's freezing cold maybe some long johns underneath. Just my thoughts!
