Hike @ Spring Mill State Park

We’ll be headed to southern Indiana again for the second time in a row after our hike at Clifty Falls in March. The terrain at Spring Mill is mainly moderate with some steep hills, and we'll plan to do around 3 ½ to 4 hours or so on the trails. We'll be covering trails 3, 4, 7, and 5, as well as checking out the Pioneer Village, which is a mini-Conner Prairie. Since this is April, be sure to be prepared for some rain depending on the forecast.

The Spring Mill website for the park is at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources site, where you can find a map of the trails. Click "Maps" on the page and then choose "Property Map."

We'll be meeting in front of the Spring Mill Inn at 1:30pm. Just look for the crowd of us. Also, we'll plan to have dinner at the Inn's restaurant afterwards. It's a buffet that usually offers the state park basics of fried chicken, roast beef, pasta, and a salad bar.

Car Pool Info: Our car pool will be meeting along the west side of Bishop Chatard High School, which is on the corner of Kessler Boulevard and Crittenden Avenue, at 5885 Crittenden Avenue. The parking along the street is free on Saturdays. We'll meet on the sidewalk at the school entrance front near the corner and leave at 11am. Please be on time.

Please note:

Car pool @ 11am

Hike @ 1:30pm

Terrain: Moderate to rugged

Length: 6 to 8 miles

See you later,

Michael

I see this weeks meetup has terrain listed as moderate to rugged. I choose another meetup for this week but am interested in future hikes. I am concerned on the definition of rugged. By the standards I have hiked in the last year I am considered novice, but its relative too the standard. More challenging hikes have been with my brother in law who owns plenty of equipment, but as for me I only own a backpack, poles, shoes, and boots.
I changed my profile picture to show a hike in British Columbia I tackled this March but it is my maximum ability. Should I be concerned

Hi Sam........I have not hiked at Spring Mill State Park before so I can't comment specifically about the level of difficulty of these particular trails. However, from my experience, the trails within the Indiana state park system rated as rugged do not typically require a great amount of technical climbing or use of special equipment. Perhaps someone who has previously hiked these trails can share their experience.

Question again where in the park can I meet you at? I am coming from Scottsburg IN which is closer for me to me there than driving up to Indy and carpooling down.

I live in Fishers and I can fit 3 people in my car if anyone is interested in carpooling. If not, I'll just plan to meet at Chatard. Looking forward to the hike...Hopefully the weather will be kind.

Michael, Bishop Chatard is having a huge garage sale Sat, 7am-noon. Carpooling from there will be a challenge.

I live close to Spring Mill so I will try to make this hike. I was there a couple weeks ago and had a great time by myself so I will look forward to some company. And I believe the caves are still closed.
